The Beginner's Guide to TV Football
Sports humor. This primer is specifically aimed at the living room fan. Stadium
viewers are a special breed. They are insane enough to spend at least three
hours in a cold, wet, drizzle and generally cannot see the intricacies of the
game anyway. That's because most of the stadium seats are 200 feet or more from
the Field of Play. And, most importantly, the stadium Instant Replay is not
accompanied by the “expert” commentary available to the TV fan. |

Coach's Guide to Real Winning, The How will you be remembered by the kids you coach? Tem or fifteen years from now, what will the kids on your team remember? The score of their last tournament game? The number of wins chalked up in their final season? Probably not. Author John Shannon, a youth coach for fifty years, reminds us that kids will remember whether they had fun and whether you taught them anything important about life. He brings new meaning to the old adage, "It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." Shannon stresses the importance of teaching self-discipline, respect, integrity, hard work, taking chances, making mistakes, winning, and losing with dignity.
You -- as the coach -- are in a unique position to teach these
lessons. In Real Winning, Shannon offers tips that will help you
create positive, lasting impressions on the kids who call you "Coach."

Fleet Walker's Divided Heart
Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first black American to play baseball in a
major league. But Walker is more than a footnote: his life demonstrates both
the devastation of racism and the role of baseball as a symbol of the nation.
Walker achieved college baseball stardom while he was a student at Oberlin
College in the 1880s. As Walker's athletic ability earned success on the
playing field, racial attitudes were hardening and segregation was becoming
the pattern of American society, both on the field and off. Teammates as well
as opponents harassed him; Cap Anson, the Chicago White Stockings star, is
credited with driving Walker and the few other blacks in the major leagues out
of the game but could not have done so alone. Walker's life was defined as
much by the fact that he was part white as it was by his black heritage. His
attempts to reconcile his Anglo and African aspects left him in glorious
disarray. Although acquitted of a murder on the grounds of self-defense, he
eventually served time in prison on a federal mail robbery conviction. A
gifted athlete, an inventor, a civil rights activist, an author, and an
entrepreneur, Walker lived precariously along the fault lines of America's
racial dilemma. He died in 1924 after a life of thwarted ambition and talent,
frustrated by both the American dream and the national pastime. |

International Pass
Intentional Pass: Pepper Marshall just signed a ten million
dollar contract to play one year of baseball. At his press conference he
announces that, despite being only 28 years old, he will retire at the end of
the year to study Eastern Mysticism and spend more time with his family. The
media doesn't buy it. Local radio shows call it a ploy to get a bigger contract,
the Washington Times calls him selfish, and Time Magazine dismisses him as the
mystic man of baseball. Whether Marshall likes it or not he has become a
lightning rod for a national debate on professional athletes and family values.
The story plays out during Marshall's final season with the Washington Senators.
The backdrop for the story is the headlines, sound bytes, and radio talk-jocks
make Marshall's retirement national news. Through it all - mentoring a rookie,
an odd bench clearing brawl, a proposition from a woman he can't refuse, and a
run for the World Series - Marshall must keep his focus on baseball and the
things in his life that matter most. |

Pro Wrestling Kids' Style
In 1984, a new wrestling league was created on a cable television channel in
Minnesota. "The Kids Pro Wrestling Show" started out as fun and games, but was
soon seen in the living rooms of thousands across the country via cable
television, and the National Wrestling Federation (NWF) was born. For five
years, the NWF was managed and promoted by a young and talented kid named Shawn
Crossen, otherwise known as "Crusher Crossen" in the ring. In 1984, Shawn was
just 14 years old, but by 1986, he was promoting live wrestling venues at local
armory halls in front of hundreds of paid spectators and nationwide cable
audiences. But going from bed mattresses in a basement to live public cards in a
professional wrestling ring did not come easy. The evolution took years to
accomplish with many obstacles along the way. From cable tv suspensions to
insurance problems, there were always a host of problems to deal with. |

San Diego Padres Complete History 1969-2002 Stories, pictures, stats, quotes… It's all here! The complete history of your San Diego Padres. See rare photos of the 'Washington' uniforms, which the Padres designed for their move in 1974! How was the name 'Padres' chosen? Why was brown the original team color? Excerpts: "The Padres' relocation to Washington was so expected that the team packed everything and even designed new uniforms in anticipation of the move. The Topps baseball card company actually changed the team name on its 1974 set to the eerily generic 'Washington NL' before correcting the error." "Kroc grabbed the microphone and announced to the crowd: 'I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we've outdrawn the Dodgers. They had 31,000 for their opener and we had 39,000 for ours… The bad news is that I've never seen such stupid ball playing in my life. Ladies and gentleman, I suffer with you!'" Thirty three years of Padres history comes to life. A must-read for any Padre fan!" - Randy Jones, 1976 Cy Young Award winner
