At Home in Asia At Home in Asia comes from the pen of Harold Stephens who has spent most of his adult years in Asia where he has become one of that region's best-known writer/adventurers. He has authored more than a dozen books (travel, adventure, exploration, biographies) and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles on his Asia experience. From mountain climbing to jungle trekking, from sailing to diving, few have experienced Asia and its people with the richness of Harold Stephens. He presently divides his time between Miranda, northern California, and Bangkok, Thailand, where he writes a weekly travel column for the Bangkok Post and is Travel Correspondent for Thai Airways International. In this, his latest book, Stephens introduces the reader to some of the fascinating expatriate men and women he has come to know over the years. The biographical sketches of action photographers, artists, philosophers, entrepreneurs, sailors, environmentalists and others, are as varied and alluring as Southeast Asia itself. The book can also serve as a how-to book for those who dream about living abroad.

Cherokee Betrayal
Documented history with extended bibliography and footnotes, but reads like a novel. Captures dramatic events leading up to Trail of Tears and immediately after--including assassinations of key leaders, arrests of missionaries, and riots stemming from mixed-race marriages. The Cherokee saga--about a people who became "civilized" by adopting commerce, trade, literacy and Christianity of the whites--served as the seminal case for how the United States related to all Native Americans thereafter.

The Enoch Train Pioneers Just imagine hundreds of people leaving their homes. Liverpool, England becomes the starting place for those routed to the Americas to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their trek took them by boat, bus, train and finally by handcart to the Great Salt Lake Valley. This book recounts the trials and triumphs of their journey based on journals and other historical documents and then gently weaves Robert's storytelling genius into short snippets of how these people might have felt during some of their adventures. This history also provides complete records of the names of every soul who made the journey along with which handcart companies they followed. A must for genealogists or those interested in early Mormon history. Midwest
Book Review says, "Highly recommended for school and community library
collections, the text reads smoothly from first page to last as the story of
this memorable bit of American history unfolds. Exhaustive appendices
round out this fascinating narrative and historical references."

Fleet Walker's Divided Heart
Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first black American to play baseball in a
major league. But Walker is more than a footnote: his life demonstrates both
the devastation of racism and the role of baseball as a symbol of the nation.
Walker achieved college baseball stardom while he was a student at Oberlin
College in the 1880s. As Walker's athletic ability earned success on the
playing field, racial attitudes were hardening and segregation was becoming
the pattern of American society, both on the field and off. Teammates as well
as opponents harassed him; Cap Anson, the Chicago White Stockings star, is
credited with driving Walker and the few other blacks in the major leagues out
of the game but could not have done so alone. Walker's life was defined as
much by the fact that he was part white as it was by his black heritage. His
attempts to reconcile his Anglo and African aspects left him in glorious
disarray. Although acquitted of a murder on the grounds of self-defense, he
eventually served time in prison on a federal mail robbery conviction. A
gifted athlete, an inventor, a civil rights activist, an author, and an
entrepreneur, Walker lived precariously along the fault lines of America's
racial dilemma. He died in 1924 after a life of thwarted ambition and talent,
frustrated by both the American dream and the national pastime. |

Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass, prominent abolitionist, civil rights
activist and reform journalist, was
raised in the malicious system of slavery. Frederick was brought to the nearby
wheat
plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. Two years later he was moved to Baltimore to
labor in
the household of Hugh and Sophia Auld, where he remained for the next seven
years.
Eventually, Frederick secretly learned to read and write, despite the laws
against slave
literacy, studied discarded newspapers, and became knowledgeable about the
national
debate over slavery. After an unsuccessful attempt to buy his freedom, Frederick
escaped
from slavery in September 1838. Soon after arriving in New Bedford, Frederick
Douglass
remarks at an August 1841 convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society
on
Nantucket Island brought him to the attention of Garrison, a leading white
abolitionist. As
he matured as an antislavery lecturer, his keen mind even led some to question
whether
he had ever been a slave. To counter doubts about his life experience as a
slave,
Douglass wrote an autobiography providing full details of his life, in the
winter of 1844-
1845. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave, is an
emotional
journey into the atrocious system of slavery, and the inspirational triumph
against
insurmountable odds. Legacy Audio is proud to present this audio book production
of
"Frederick Douglass: Narrative of an American Slave". |

Healing The Nation An In-Depth Study of African-Americans By Dorothy Rutledge Swygert The heart of America has grown cold. Early in its history, America was a nation of families and neighbors building community-homes that were safe havens, churches that provided a moral compass, schools that followed the Golden Rule, and communities that embraced their children. Today, however, lust and greed have crept into the fabric of the nation, tearing it from it's traditional moral foundation in those four basic institutions-home, church, school, and community.

In the Lord's Eyes
Mama s Pearls is the sixth book in author Charlotte Johnson s series of motivational text. This book is a very poignant chronicle of the faith, wit, and the down home charm of Ms. Johnson s mother, Evelyn Russell. Loyal fans of Ms. Johnson have already developed a feeling of closeness to her mother, affectionately called Mother Russell. Throughout Ms. Johnson s books, her mother serves as a spiritual mentor teaching her about love and redemption through her selfless love. Mother Russell loves, when it seems that her daughter is beyond change and is unwilling to embrace her mother s instructions. Mother Russell is a paradox. She is both a spiritually mature student of the Bible, while maintaining her down home folksy charm, sharp tongue, and nostalgic stories of her youth that serve to entertain the reader. These stories offer inspiration, encouragement, hope, and motivation. More importantly, these oral traditions serve as method of handing down the wisdom of times past. A mother s love can be essential to a child s emotional well-being and character development. Charlotte Johnson shares her mother with the world to offer hope and encouragement in troubled times. This book is excellent for those in need of hope, seeking a miracle, searching for a way to maintain their faith, or looking for an uplifting and humorous book. Mother Russell grew up in a family where oral storytelling was a method of passing family wisdom and traditions to the younger generations. She passed these stories onto her children. These stories are a combination of Mother Russell s life experiences and oral traditions passed from her father. My heart was touched when Ms. Johnson wrote earlier in her series, Mama why do you still care? Mama s Pearl answers why a mother still cares when all hope is gone and the world has given up on her child. As Ms. Johnson explores her family s past in order to bring light and perspective to the present, Mama s Pearls is reminiscent of Alex Haley s Roots.

Just Call Me Moose!
The
256-page book illustrated with 17 vintage photos not only provides a visceral
look at an important time in history. The book also explores author Karl
Bossi's lifelong confrontation with his father's suicide which occurred just
days before his senior prom. In deference to this, a portion of the book
revenues will be given to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention (www.afsp.org)
in New York City.
Bossi's memoir,
sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet, is a vivid and often humorous portrait of
what it was like to grow up in a comfortable middle-class family with
poles-apart Italian-speaking parents. Only later does he realize that "Mum"
had never found Pop's channel, the one he transmitted on, but not until he
understands that "Mum" never could tune into her last son any better.
Ron
Della Chiesa, an icon of WGBH Boston public radio, noted that "Just Call Me
Moose! Growing Up Italian in America" is "a powerful and poignant journey
that takes the reader from the streets of Boston in the 'fifties to the
jungles of Vietnam." He added, "This is a nostalgic tale, sometimes humorous,
sometimes sad. I can relate to his search for the cause of his father's
untimely and tragic death. ...Fascinating and thought provoking. ...I laughed and
cried, and you will too!" Karl R. Bossi, a native of Boston, graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in mathematics and left home for the United States Air Force. Karl retired as a lieutenant colonel after serving in Europe and the Far East. He led a bomb disposal team in Vietnam and later became an aerospace logistic engineer. He holds graduate degrees in counseling and guidance and procurement management and is a published writer.

Look What Happened While You Were Sleeping By A friend of Medjugorje After the French and Indian War (1763), the King of England disallowed an act made by the Colony of Virginia's assembly. In a lawsuit, a young lawyer by the name of Patrick Henry declared that the king was a tyrant and that by the act of disallowance, the king forfeited his right to have the colonists remain obedient to him. If the beginning steps that led to the formation of our nation started from such actions, which by comparison to our situation today, was much less grievous, how much more justified would citizens be in taking similar actions in our present situation? Patrick Henry's statement called for disallowing the legitimacy of the king to govern over them. What legitimacy, therefore, should we consider our government today to have that allows the formation of laws, which disallows natural law? Laws that take from citizens their private property, permit abortion and accept unnatural lifestyles. Laws against natural law are laws without legitimacy. We must ask the question, has the present system of electing and governing betrayed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? If it has, then are we not being led to the same conclusion as Patrick Henry—that the ruling government over us has made itself illegitimate? Has the present form of government hi-jacked our legitimate Declaration and Constitutional, Republic form of government? If we answer yes, then how will we respond? Will we follow the witness of our Forefathers who recognized that the king had forfeited the right to govern and therefore, forfeited the right to have the people remain obedient to him? Has the present form of government, which is acting against our republic and the will of the people it is suppose to represent, forfeited the right to govern? At what point do the words declared in the Declaration, "It is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and provide new guards for their future security" play in against the present form of government? The present form of governing is not fulfilling the dreams our Forefathers had. We are called to fulfill those dreams. The time is ripe. The time is now.

Being a relative of an international icon has its highs, lows, ups, downs. Her experiences include: crime, drugs, prostitution, poverty, incest, torment, danger and intrigue. And through these experiences, she had to find out the hard way that it's the choices we make that determine our outcome. This memoir will make you laugh and cry, and hopefully, make you reconsider your own chosen path or the path you are about to take. Shakeeta's faith in God helped her to overcome the painful past and serves as an example of what can be done when you believe nothing shall be impossible with God. |

The Oldest Europeans
What made Europe unique? DNA tests show that only a few hardy,
female-structured families survived the coldest episode of the Ice Age. Most
Europeans are their descendants. Paleolithic females decided the marriage of
their brothers, inheritance went to women and men were known by the name of
their mothers. Ancient European women were pretty, sexy and aggressive. They had
a surprisingly high status. Power came only through them. Paleolithic rituals
originated modern theater. Mother Goddess' myths started classic and renaissance
art. Many modern religious traditions keep some of their fertility cult rites.
The book describes their societies and the clash against the invading Indo-European
tribes that suppressed women's rights and dethroned them from their control of
religious rituals. The still formidable influence of those mostly ignored,
ancient societies has forged the European soul and originated the American
traditions of freedom. It is deeply influencing the world. Basques, Celts,
Etruscans, Pelasgians parade through these pages tied by their DNA, revealing a
surprising world full of werewolves, snake-priestesses, witches and sex rituals. |

Of Angels and Rolling Pins
Jennifer embarks on a casual trip to her hometown in Wisconsin, but finds more than the simple visit home she expected. Her aunt's collection of rolling pins starts a journey through Jenny's family heritage. Each rolling pin represents a person's story, as well as the love and anguish experienced along the way. The family legends engulfJenny, compelling her to examine her life away from Wisconsin. JackieGould's distinctive use of the rolling pins as the medium for initiating the narration of family legends makes each tale all the more captivating and memorable. This novel employs the depth of historical ties and heritages without detracting from the gratifying presence of common themes--rather, these qualities engage to strengthen the novel's appeal. |

The Other Side! Now in its second edition, this memoir captures a young woman's coming of age in Nazi Germany. Inge's family tried to isolate itself from Hitler's destructive policies, but the young girl who presented flowers to the visiting Fuhrer in 1935 and the young woman who nursed wounded soldiers in 1943 could not escape the devastating effects of the war and Nazism. After the war, Inge resolved to escape East Germany for Western Europe and the promise of freedom. This portrait of life during wartime, seen through the eyes of an adolescent girl, speaks profoundly to the cost of conflict on all people. Inge's is a story of endurance and hope, of being caught in the flood of history, but managing to swim to safety.

The River is Mine Ardian Gill's novel tells the story of John Wesley Powell's 1869
exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers and the Grand Canyon. It is the
adventure of ten men shooting rapids and painstakingly carrying and lining heavy
wooden boats through cascades, cataracts and waterfalls. The action is
breathtaking and invigorating, the story straight forward and clearly told.
Written as a fictional expansion of the actual diary of one member of the
expedition, the action is always front and center, but enriched by the interplay
among the men, who include journalists, farmers, trappers, and Civil War
veterans. Most intriguing, perhaps, is the narrator's changing view of the head
of the expedition – the brilliant, narrow-visioned, intrepid, one-armed Major
Powell. Read this novel for the adventure, for the character studies, and for
the satisfaction of how ordinary men can uplift us by their determination and
physical courage. "Superbly crafted, vividly told...powerfully presented and
emotionally involving." |

The Struggle for Survival an historical, political, and socioeconomic perspective of St. Lucia By Dr. Anderson Reynolds Dr. Anderson Reynolds long awaited book, The Struggle For Survival: an historical, political, and socioeconomic perspective of St. Lucia, eloquently retells the story of the tragic 1993 banana strike that culminated in the shooting death of two farmers. However, by going beyond the tragedy and delving into the island's history, farmers' struggles against droughts, hurricanes, falling prices, corrupt institutions, and multinational corporations is seen as a microcosm of the struggles of a people against slavery, colonialism, imperialism, and natural calamities. One comes away from a reading of The Struggle For Survival with the feeling that the plight of farmers was nothing less than an allegory of the history of the island, and the deaths an omen of the future of the banana industry in St. Lucia. The Struggle For Survival is history that reads like a novel. It is a multilayered and dynamic narrative of the history, politics, culture and economics of St. Lucia. It provides a compelling narrative on what it means to be a St. Lucian, what forces have come together to define and shape St. Lucian society, and the path the country needs to take to move forward as a nation.

Touchdown The Story of the Cornell Bear By John H. Foote Most Cornellians believe that a bear has been the mascot of the Big Redathletic teams and a symbol of Cornell since the University’s earliestdays. The fact is a bear, and a real live bear at that, made its firstappearance on the Cornell campus in 1915, and over the next quarter of acentury was only a sporadic visitor on campus (1916, 1919 and 1939). It wasthese bears, who were flesh and blood, honey-loving, mischievous, and at times ill-tempered, that started the tradition of the Big Red Bear, the much-loved,unofficial mascot of Cornell. There has been much said about these founding bears, but as is typicalwith oral histories, particularly on a college campus where the stories arerecast every year, the history has become muddled. Touchdown: The Story of the Cornell Bear,by John Foote(Cornell Class of 1974), is thetrue tale of the four original bears and their adventures on campus and on theroad. “Foote has put together a livelyhistory of the Cornell bears, telling their story in words and a wonderfularray of pictures. Every Cornellian will love this book.” CarolKammen—Cornell: Glorious to View(2003) and First Person Cornell: StudentDiaries, Letters, Email and Blogs (2005)

Toward Holistic History
Historian, international lecturer, city planner, and early advocate of
interdisciplinary study, Corinne Lathrop Gilb draws on disciplines beyond the
conventional study of history to explore such diverse topics as symbolism in
urban structure, biorhythms as determinants of creativity, the intertwined
histories of liberalism and corporatism, and the role of beauty in public
policy. Woven as a subtext throughout this collection of articles, speeches,
and other short writings is Dr. Gilb's inquiry into the dynamic between inner
history ("the architecture of self-space") and outer history.
Thought-provoking and entertaining, Toward Holistic History is timely in its
call for an historiography that recognizes the "great honeycomb" of pluralisms
that defines our world. |

Under The Rising Sun Against the advice of his father, Mario Machi dropped out of college
and enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 17, 1941. War in the Pacific
seemed imminent and he believed it was best for him to enlist early and get
himself into something he liked. He'd had three years of college behind him
at San Francisco State. With a major in physical education, he'd studied
anatomy and biology, and some medicine, and decided the medical corps was
the place for him. However, he'd received very little training and in
September he asked to be transferred to the infantry. Like all soldiers readying themselves to go overseas, Mario Machi had a dinner with his family and friends on Fisherman's Wharf, made wishes, tossed pennies into the water, began a diary and naively entered into his diary that he hoped this would be an "experience of value" and that he and all his friends would return safely. Two months later, they were thrown into a world they had not thought humanly possible.

Up From Slavery For half a century from its publication in 1901 Up from
Slavery was the best known book written by an African American. The life of
ex-slave Booker T. Washington embodied the legendary rise of American self-made
man, and his autobiography gave prominence for the first time to the voice of a
group which had to pull itself up from nothing. From behind the mask of the
humble, plainspoken schoolmaster come hints that reveal Washington as the
ambitious and tough-minded analyst, a man who had to balance the demands of
blacks with the constraints imposed on him by whites.

Woodstock This first official history of the town documents the run-up of events
that culminated in the iconic Woodstock Festival of 1969, and serves as a
reminder of the values and artistic impulses that underpinned a more idealistic
era. It tells the story of Woodstock from the time of the Amerindians, up
through Revolutionary days, the glass-making era, the down-rent war, and the
establishment of a utopian arts enclave during the early 20th century. With an
artist's eye, a worldly sophistication and a you-are-there charm, Smith weaves
in tales of witches, farmers, mountain folk, Second World War veterans, and an
astonishing array of fellow artists, neighbors and visitors that include Eleanor
Roosevelt, John Burroughs, George Bellows, Helen Hayes, James T. Shotwell, John
F. Carlson, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Edward G. Robinson, John Dewey, Pete Seeger, Carl
Walters and many others. |
