Amazon Gold
A Ben Candidi Mystery
By Dirk Wyle, Rainbow Books

The fourth novel in the Ben Candidi Series, Amazon Gold is a mystery-thriller that appeals to the intellect. The story is powered by medical science, business and anthropology, and is driven by the professional challenges of a two-career couple.

There is no room for Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) in the dugout canoe that will take Rebecca Levis (M.D.) deep into the Amazon rain forest to provide medical care to the once-fierce Yanomama Indians. The freelance scientist kisses his physician soul mate goodbye and returns to Miami to complete his report — predicting how emerging technologies may speed the discovery of new drugs. Client Michael Malencik and his unnamed company are impatient and vaguely dissatisfied with Ben's preliminary findings. His project is set back by an unannounced visit by the DEA and by fallout from an anthropology conference which he attends to take notes for Rebecca. Ben's quick thinking foils an assassination attempt on the keynote speaker who then proves suspicious and ungrateful. Other distractions include a surprise visit from Nica Brasaro, flight attendant on the Manaus-to-Miami run.

Working hard on the technology project, Ben discovers something much more valuable than predictions. But Rebecca does not return with her expedition and her brief, infrequent satellite e-mails are becoming increasingly strange. When they stop altogether, Ben throws down his report and picks up his backpack.

Searching for Rebecca deep in the Brazilian rain forest, Ben wonders whether his most important clues may be back in Miami. In a stunning climax, Ben and Rebecca are reunited to discover astonishing truths — and to fight for their lives.

The Black Stone
By Linda Cargill

Everyone was convulsed by the Planes Operation on 9/11. No one heard about the Black Stone Plot. It was to take place on the very same day – September 11, 2001. It failed – the first time around. The key co-conspirator escaped the collapse of the Twin Towers. He's back at it and ready to try again. The time could be a year away – or one second from now. The clock is ticking . . .

Madeline Anthony-Pratt is no different from you or me except that she just found out about the plot. She does something very innocent. She climbs over the wall to her neighbor's house one night to retrieve her cat. Intruders appear. She hides in the shadows. They whisper in a foreign tongue and hold out a Pepsi can with black crud on it. They light a match.

This Pepsi can looks like an IED that her brother, Wyatt, wrote about in his emails from Iraq. She's in Tucson, not Baghdad or Baquoba! Why are they trying to blow up her neighbor's house tonight?

The men aren't telling as the match gets closer to the wick . . . What Madeline doesn't know will hurt her the most. This is no ordinary plot. It's bigger than 9/11 and far more devastating. The Black Stone Plot has been two thousand years in the making.

The Boston Blue - A Screenplay
A Sports Drama for the New Millennium

By Jessie Jamie Coleman

It's the sports story of the century! The Chicago Voyagers, NBA champions and The Boston Blue, WNBA champions are the dream teams in this acclaimed sports story. The author, Jessie Jamie Coleman, does an excellent job at challenging the notion that men are better at sports than women by pitting the NBA against the WNBA. That premise alone would have been enough to keep readers turning pages, but the author does not stop there. The drama begins with Jay Byrd, star player of the Chicago Voyagers, appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show days after the championship game. At this point, we don t know who won this game that went down in history. Jay then takes us back to the beginning. Jay Byrd is charismatic, witty and every bit as good at his game as one might assume. He makes a promise to his dying mother not to break the heart of his first love. With every intention of honoring that promise, Jay finds himself drawn to WNBA champion, Jessie Winters, star player of the Boston Blue. Jessie Winters is talented, beautiful and adamant about always doing what s right. And the chemistry between the two is perfect and offers excellent contrast. When they meet for the first time, sparks sizzle immediately. Jessie does, however, find Jay a little cocky for her type, but she doesn t dismiss him totally. To make things more complicated for Jessie, Jay vacillates between his first love and the woman he always wanted to love, Jessie Winters. Though this script takes to the court with all the fervor, spark, and talent a crowd loves to see in a championship game, the meat of the story is the buildup to this big game. And be forewarned, the ending is not what you might expect, but nevertheless, you will be fascinated and satisfied.

The Brown Curtains
By Clive Sankardayal

In this his debut novel, Sankardayal has succeeded in crafting a work of genius. His portrayal of the racial disharmony that has characterized his homeland, Guyana, is mirrored glaringly in the daring of a young Indo-Guyanese emigrant to a neighboring Caribbean island as he breaks with tradition by taking a Black (African) bride. It is a little story of a huge problem told by someone who has encountered a new reality of social integration that calls into question the sanity of old customs—"You fossilized piece of shit" as Raj refers to a fellow emigrant in a fit of rage. Indeed, Sankardayal has produced an insightful, persuasive and entertaining work of art. His narrative skills, characterization and purposefulness combine to make this book a must-read for all racial strands, especially the people of Indian and African culture who inhabit these islands of the archipelago (or elsewhere in the diaspora). The Brown Curtains is a powerful, scholarly and critical commentary on race, culture and religion and the uncompromising influence of love.

Looking back ten years ago, who would have ever thought that this well-respected -- and very well-paid -- thirty-five-year-old assistant principal for a performing arts school, would trade in her husband and her daughter, a two-story brick home in a gated community, and a fully-equipped Jaguar for a body riddled with track marks and a substance that gave her a better feeling than sex.

But when that candy, as she knows it, finally runs out, Faith resorts to the "desperate times, calls for desperate measures" solution, which will have her playing Russian roulette with the angel of death. And sooner than later, these episodes will catch up with her so that she will be forced to make some life-altering choices -- but will it be too late?

Captain Rakehell (Large Print)
By Lynn Michaels

Marriage to such a lord was a fate worse than death! True, Amanda Gilbertson hadn't seen the toad-eating wretch since they were both children, but that didn't stop her from spending the Duchess of Braxton's party hiding in a tree to avoid the loathsome man. But Fate played its delightful hand that evening when she found herself in the potent midnight embrace of the black-masked Captain Rakehell. He was a thief, no doubt, but a romantic dream-come-true compared to the ridiculous fop who had just been announced as Lesley Earnshaw, her betrothed. Amanda knew her preordained future would change forever, if she could only determine the true identity of the notorious Captain Rakehell.

Clawed Back from the Dead
by John F. Rooney

A vicious killer is murdering the key people involved in the making of the movie "Nine Lives, Two Men," the true story of the battle between New York City detective Denny Delaney and the terrorist bomber Felix the Cat. It was Delaney who ushered Felix to his death in a Grand Central tunnel after Felix's terrorist rampage in the prequel to "Clawed" entitled "Nine Lives Too Many." The reader is in for some surprises as well as a roller-coaster ride as this thriller careens and caroms on its suspenseful track. The book revisits Denny's Manhattan and reacquaints readers with characters from the earlier book. There are humorous morsels in the story as well as grub for show biz junkies. Code Green
By Greg Jenkins

"I was having lunch with Dexter DeWitt. This in itself was a questionable activity on my part." So begins Code Green, by Greg Jenkins, whose anti-hero Chip Stone engages in quite a few questionable activities.

Stone is a male nurse who works in a psychiatric hospital and has almost as many behavioral issues as the residents he cares for. Those residents include DeWitt, a one-time cultural critic gone bonkers; Tim Valentine, who snacks on light bulbs; Philip Nolan, who contends (correctly) that he's actually a character in a novel; and Glinda Moon, an anorexic witch.

As the violence at his workplace intensifies, the confused Stone lights out on a desperate but comical odyssey to find his estranged wife—and himself. His wanderings take him through the netherworld of western Maryland, where he meets old friends, new enemies and one highly unusual sister-in-law. In the end, he discovers that the line between the sane and the not-so-sane is more gossamer than even he had suspected.

With its over-the-top characters and gaudy, entertaining prose, Code Green offers a bumptious blend of humor and pathos well-suited to the uncertainties of a new millennium.

Color Him Father
Stories of Love and Rediscovery of Black Men

By Stephana I. Colbert & Valerie I. Harrison

Color Him Father: Stories of Love and Rediscovery of Black Men is both a tribute to and a celebration of Black fathers. Seeking more positive, balanced images of African-American men than the news media seems to allow, the editors embarked on a journey to collect true, anecdotal narratives about Black fathers from those who love them. While the attention of the news media is often on Black men who struggle on the one hand, and on the superstar athletes and entertainers on the other, Color Him Father adds our everyday heroes to the landscape - the countless Black men, despite the legacy of slavery and racism, are responsible, committed leaders in their homes and their communities. In these stories, authors share intimate and loving secrets that paint a portrait of Black men as productive role models. What emerges is a message of hope, for Black children and Black families.

The 36 contributing authors represent a diverse assortment of children, mates and friends of all ages and stations in life, and include noted authors, Clifton Taulbert, Stephanie Stokes Oliver, and Venise Berry; Lawrence Douglas Wilder, Jr., son of former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder; and leading theologian and author Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

The depth and breadth of these wonderful stories - some tender, other raw-present all the different "colors" of Black fathers, and will inspire, move, and make the reader smile. Simply put, the reader will enjoy a good book.

Cross Roads
By Carl Patterson

Southern Pines, North Carolina, is supposed to be a place where you can raise your children and not worry about safety. That was true until single mother Dorothy and her two sons, Bobby and Johnny, have to abandon their hometown when death comes knocking on their door. In a quest to flee after her best friend and mother-in-law are murdered, Dorothy hastily relocates her kids from their beloved community in the south to the gang- and drug-infested streets of Bedford Stuyvesant, New York.

Brooklyn breeds a new batch of worries as the younger son, Bobby, joins a vicious street gang. As Bobby struggles with the peer pressure of the ghetto—drug hustlers, prostitutes, gang violence, shootouts, and stabbings—his brother, Johnny, plans to kill the woman who gave him life.

Cross Roads is a classic timepiece set in the 1950s but is reminiscent of modern times. Just as the Bishops and Chaplins fought for territory back then, Bloods and Crips wage the same wars in today's society. This inspiring coming-of-age story details how a young boy is forced to become a man while fighting for his life and the safety of his family.

Death by Fire
By Dr. Anderson Reynolds

Set in the picturesque Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Death by Fire is an epic novel in which natural calamities, historical events, supernatural forces, and betrayed love all combine in deciding the fate of its characters. It is a profound statement on the nature of fate and the forces that shape society. A story that is as compelling and spellbinding as the island (in which it is set) is beautiful.

Death by Fire brings to mind the novels of William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, and Jamaica Kincaid.

* Reviews *

"The telling of the story is exceptional . . . extremely difficult to put it down . . . a seething cauldron of love, lust, hate and disaster . . . a cunningly-woven tale of people; their tribulations, passions, loves, frustrations, and the intricate way in which they touched and influenced each other . . . a journey back into St. Lucian life . . . (which) paints the dark side of the struggle for survival in a young country." The Voice

"This is a novel on a grand scale . . . a broad canvas of St. Lucian life . . . in which the social, economic, political, and personal tensions are profound statements on the nature of our island society, and one which is required reading for anyone seeking a greater understanding of what is happening today, and who might wish to shape a better society for future generations. If one is looking for a key to the feeling and conscience of the age in which we live, this novel is a guide." The Crusader

Death by Fire is an impressive piece of narration . . . a veritable tapestry of St. Lucian life and culture . . . educates the reader on the social, economic and political modes of existence of the inhabitants in the post–slavery/emancipation periods through to the early 19th and into the 20th century. . . Reading it left me with a seething appetite for more. Easily one of the most compelling pieces of literature I have laid hands on in recent years." Modeste Downes—author of Phases

Alden Homer and Blake Whitman, the main characters in
Déjà Vu, are traveling their own paths, which seem to cross more frequently than usual for two dissimilar guys on the road in Asia.  Their thoughts and experiences are pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that the reader can assemble.  Alden, who experimented with drugs during his Ivy League days, is now in his 50's.  He has passed through Wall Street and sacrificed a marriage to his literary aspirations.  Searching for the Muse, he'll settle for enlightenment.  Blake, the narrator, is taking a year off before medical school, and is enthusiastically seeking the adventure he could only read about -- or see in the movies -- back home in Middle America.  He chases the Exotic.  Independently or together, these two colorful characters encounter a nymphomaniac, a murder victim, Christian fundamentalists, Hindu holy men, inmates at a mental institution, and a yeti  -- not to mention their own dreams.

Guildworks
Writings by the West Side Writers Guild
By Mark Allen Boone (other contributer)

“With its slick cover, solid editing, and often compelling work, Guildworks: Writings by the West Side Writers Guild bears few signs of self-publication,” said the Literary Supplement of NEW CITY, Chicago’s arts and entertainment weekly.

An unusual anthology of works by natives of Chicago’s toughest and poorest section, a locale that fosters people who gain strength from adversity, Guildworks’ highlights include poet Cranston Knight’s “You Ain’t Got No Culture,” in which he “disses” a friend for his lack of refinement, only to end by praising him for his loyalty; Boone’s “A Visit to the Poe House,” that recounts his harrowing search for the poet’s Baltimore row house located in the heart of a drug den; Irene J. Smith’s novel excerpt that sets the stage for the late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington’s 1983 mayoral campaign; and Tina Jenkins Bell’s lighthearted account of the sexual harassment she encountered on the road as a publishing sales representative.

Distemper
By James Nulick

When Drew Estrada, a young teacher, suddenly finds himself the legal guardian of Tre Warner, a popular student, his life becomes torn apart by desire. In this imaginative, accomplished novel about sex, murder, and skateboards, reality becomes increasingly unclear. Is Tre a real person or a hallucinatory product of Drew's damaged soul? Distemper is ultimately a meditation on the illusory nature of love. National Book Award Winner William T. Vollmann has called this book "a beautifully written catalogue of various kinds of unhappiness." Josh Aterovis, author of the Killian Kendall Mystery Series, says, "Nulick's debut novel almost reads like poetry. He understands that the Devil is in the details… but so is the Deity."

"This is a lovely fantasy, reminiscent of "Watership Down," with a dash of the "Ugly Duckling" thrown in. Magic, quests, the fight between good and evil, they are all here, with dragons as the protagonists, but with all too human emotions. ...A great read for any age." ~ Reviewed by Annette Gisby, author of "Writing the Dream."

"[Dragon's Moon] is full of wondrous creatures and adventures. As our little dragon is constantly being led by his conscience, this is a wonderful tool for children as they learn to recognize wrong from right. ...the land of Nistala will definitely engage a child's imagination. • Face Down in the Marrow-Bone Pie (Large Print)
    By Kathy Lynn Emerson

"Today's letter was not a summons to serve Queen Elizabeth. It came from Lancashire. John Bexwith, my steward at Appleton Manor, is dead."

Susanna frowned, surprised that this news should have affected her husband so strongly. "The man was quite elderly," she said hesitantly, "was he not?"

"Your memory is excellent," Robert told her, absently tucking an unruly lock of dark brown hair back up under her brocaded cap. "He was found face down in a marrow-bone pie."

With that incredible statement, Robert placed the letter in his wife's outstretched hand.

Face Down in the Marrow-Bone Pie is a delightfully cozy Elizabethan mystery introducing Susanna, Lady Appleton. When her husband's steward dies in a unique, ignominious, and highly suspicious manner, Susanna takes advantage of her husband's absence on a political mission for Queen Elizabeth to investigate Bexwith's mysterious demise.

The serving wench who found Bexwith claims that he was frightened to death by a ghost, but Susanna can think of several poisons that could have been concealed in the marrow-bone pie. (Susanna is something of an expert on poisons, having been inspired by her sister's fatal encounter with some poisonous berries to write a cautionary herbal for housewives.)

Even if Bexwith was poisoned, was it accidental or intentional? As if the case weren't complicated enough, Susanna must also unmask a "ghost"-- or are the ghost and the poisoner one and the same?

Kathy Lynn Emerson's debut Elizabethan mystery will delight as it introduces you to a sixteenth-century husband's worst nightmare: an intelligent, no-nonsense wife who happens to know hundreds of poisons.

Face Down upon an Herbal marks the return of Susanna, Lady Appleton, an Elizabethan woman who literally wrote the book on poisons. While her husband is away on a diplomatic mission to Scotland, Susanna is summoned by Queen Elizabeth to work on a new book of botanical decoctions at Madderly Castle. But when the herbalist learns that a pugnacious Scots baron has been found murdered atop the herbal that she has authored, she realizes that there is more to the queen's request. Then the killer strikes again, and strong-minded Susanna takes matters into her own hands and investigates the dastardly deeds. To uncover the truth, however, she must answer some vexing questions: Why are Lord Madderly and the local authorities so quick to blame an outside intruder? How are the deaths linked to a forger who specializes in noble genealogies? Is the murderer part of a treasonous conspiracy against the queen? Faced with a host of suspects who are not as they seem, Susanna must work quickly to find the killer's identity - before she becomes his or her next victim.

    Far in Noetrea
    By Lucian Leonte

Now financially self-sufficient, still young, and happily married, Stefan is ready to embark on an occupation true to his desires, but what that might be turns into an alienating question. To break the incapacitating deadlock he sets out for Noetrea, a faraway land, where people are said to live according to a different set of assumptions. Once there, he has to learn too quickly of the customs and unambivalent laws, just like the few other outlanders who made the trip, Kal, his parallel ego, included. Otherwise the system appears benign and highly efficient. From the glowing populace to the immaculate architecture and the antiseptic surround, Noetrea is world’s apart from the coarseness of his home place. But what Stefan is being absorbed by is the curious sense of legacy embedded in all the abundant products and representations, from utilitarian objects to artwork and to the omnipresent statues, and that ties into the very question he is wrestling with. Nefri, the local girl, may provide the insight, for a price. Eventually, he learns why Nothingness may have inspired his explorations. Included are seven restored sketches, as documents remaining from the journey.

My first mystery series starred Ellie Bernstein, a diet club leader/sleuth. Ellie is owned by a cat named Jackie Robinson. My dogs, Cherokee, Sydney, and Pandora begged for their own series so I created one. Cherokee (AKA Hitchcock) insisted that a portion of all profits be donated to Canine Companions, an organization that trains dogs to help the handicapped.

    The Glass Heart
    By  Kathleen A. Killion

How would you describe the colors of your heart? Are the colors bright or dark… swirled or solid? No matter what colors you imagine, believing in the beauty of your heart is the message of the newly released book, The Glass Heart.

In the vein of childhood classics such as Cinderella, The Glass Heart takes readers on a quest to find true love. In this fable, a young girl trades her beautiful glass heart for another to please others. Readers may relate this to the everyday experiences of bowing to peer pressure, fitting in with the "right" crowd, or changing to be like others.

At the girl's request, a glassblower makes her a new, beautiful, jeweled, glass heart but it soon becomes a burden to carry. After experiencing several adventures of the heart, the girl ultimately returns to her safe and trusted place, the home of the glassblower, where she discovers the beauty of her own heart.

For girls struggling to find their way through the often turbulent tween, teen, or young adult years, The Glass Heart is the perfect story to point out the importance of being true to one's self. For parents looking to find innovative ways to celebrate individuality amongst their children or for anyone looking to make a heartsick friend look toward a bright future, this book is the perfect gift.

"This is a story about finding and celebrating one's true self," says St. Louis-based author Kathleen A. Killion. "It is the most important journey in anyone's life and sometimes the most difficult. It is my hope that this book will inspire people to celebrate their own unique personalities and talents through the universal messages related in the story."

Killion's story is magically brought to life through a series of watercolor illustrations by St. Louis artist and art school teacher Gary M. Lang. Making a conscious decision not to give any physical attributes to the characters in the story, "The Glass Heart" allows readers of all ages and backgrounds to use their imaginations and place themselves in images that relate to their own life journey.

While doing various school presentations, Killion has amassed dozens of pictures of hearts drawn by children after they've heard The Glass Heart. "Kids more often than not know exactly what the color of their true heart is," says Killion. "Ironically, adults are more hesitant and less in touch when describing their hearts. Ultimately, it is the job of parents, teachers, coaches and other adults in nurturing roles to help children find the swirls of colors unique to each child reflecting a rainbow of individuality and contentment." Killion now is working to develop a traveling display of the heart pictures, with one exhibit already planned for the St. Louis Science
    Center.

As Killion takes her educational message about self-love on the road, she is also planning to link similar programs for youth on self-esteem, sportsmanship and bullying prevention. The Glass Heart Foundation has been set up, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book going toward foundation programs.

Questions Killion often asks during her programs:
How many of you have had words hurt your heart?
How many of you have used words that may have hurt other hearts?
Who is your "safe person" like the glassblower in the story?
Tell me what makes you and your heart special?

    Green 61
    An Anderson Parker Legal Thriller
    by Cody Fowler Davis

Justin Cartwright II is a real bastard of a lawyer and he's not much more attractive as a person. In court, he tends to skate right up to the edge of what's ethical and is not averse to slipping over if it means winning a case. Anderson Parker is just the opposite; bright, resourceful, and integrity is his middle name. No wonder it's so satisfying when Parker tells Cartwright, who happens to be his boss, to take his job and… well, you get the picture.
It's also something like poetic justice when, after the rift, these two attorneys face off on opposite sides of a legal battle in which two young children and an adult man have been killed in a boating accident. We know who's responsible. What we don't know is whether they will be brought to justice. With Cartwright's nasty tactics, and a bungling third party's lawyer, we're in suspense right up to the end.
Green 61 is a real "I know it's late, but I just don't want to put it down" kind of a book. It's all the more so because it was written by a successful attorney who knows the legal system inside and out, and is well acquainted with the tactics—savory and less so—of those who work in it. It's authentic, it's believable, and it's absolutely engaging from the first sentence through to the last.
If an intriguing story and spending time inside the heads of real characters is what you're looking for, you have found it in Green 61.

    Half Moon
    By K. L. Vidal

Half Moon, a hauntingly beautiful saga set in Paris, New York, and Atlantic Canada, explores themes of passion, betrayal, art and redemption in the story of an elusively beautiful woman and the world-class painter obsessed with creating her portrait.

    Summary:

June. Orly Airport. Unprecedented heat wave gripping the city. Among the passengers just arrived from New York is Mrs. Caroline Devereux. She is noticed at once, not just for her singular beauty but for the long skirt and black turtleneck so inappropriate in such blistering heat.

A native of Buenos Aires, graduate of Yale University, sole heir to her father's estate in Connecticut, Mrs. Devereux has come to France for the funeral of an uncle. Her only acquaintance in Paris is her cousin. Unaccompanied, she waits for him in the Crillon lounge that night, where once again, even more than her outfit, her enigmatic allure is observed. Among those intrigued is Jude McCallister – lionized, wealthy, world-class portraitist par excellence. As the music plays on he finds himself somehow, disturbingly, driven to paint the remarkable woman staring back at him, ever-silent.

What follows is the story of Jude and Caroline Devereux. Obsessed, Jude pursues her across Paris. She agrees to a portrait, dressed despite the lingering heat in a pale turtleneck and long skirt. After a week, he persuades her to leave these clothes in his mirrored changing room, bringing others to wear after their sittings. Thus it is that Caroline finally confronts her nakedness. She stares at the burn tissue on her neck, ribs, hips, inner thighs; she studies the half-moon scar on her right breast; she finds, to her utter astonishment, that in its exquisite proportions, alluring shape and uniquen
