Amazon Gold
A Ben Candidi Mystery
By Dirk Wyle, Rainbow Books

The fourth novel in the Ben Candidi Series, Amazon Gold is a mystery-thriller that appeals to the intellect. The story is powered by medical science, business and anthropology, and is driven by the professional challenges of a two-career couple.

There is no room for Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) in the dugout canoe that will take Rebecca Levis (M.D.) deep into the Amazon rain forest to provide medical care to the once-fierce Yanomama Indians. The freelance scientist kisses his physician soul mate goodbye and returns to Miami to complete his report — predicting how emerging technologies may speed the discovery of new drugs. Client Michael Malencik and his unnamed company are impatient and vaguely dissatisfied with Ben's preliminary findings. His project is set back by an unannounced visit by the DEA and by fallout from an anthropology conference which he attends to take notes for Rebecca. Ben's quick thinking foils an assassination attempt on the keynote speaker who then proves suspicious and ungrateful. Other distractions include a surprise visit from Nica Brasaro, flight attendant on the Manaus-to-Miami run.

Working hard on the technology project, Ben discovers something much more valuable than predictions. But Rebecca does not return with her expedition and her brief, infrequent satellite e-mails are becoming increasingly strange. When they stop altogether, Ben throws down his report and picks up his backpack.

Searching for Rebecca deep in the Brazilian rain forest, Ben wonders whether his most important clues may be back in Miami. In a stunning climax, Ben and Rebecca are reunited to discover astonishing truths — and to fight for their lives.

The Black Stone
By Linda Cargill

Everyone was convulsed by the Planes Operation on 9/11. No one heard about the Black Stone Plot. It was to take place on the very same day – September 11, 2001. It failed – the first time around. The key co-conspirator escaped the collapse of the Twin Towers. He's back at it and ready to try again. The time could be a year away – or one second from now. The clock is ticking . . .

Madeline Anthony-Pratt is no different from you or me except that she just found out about the plot. She does something very innocent. She climbs over the wall to her neighbor's house one night to retrieve her cat. Intruders appear. She hides in the shadows. They whisper in a foreign tongue and hold out a Pepsi can with black crud on it. They light a match.

This Pepsi can looks like an IED that her brother, Wyatt, wrote about in his emails from Iraq. She's in Tucson, not Baghdad or Baquoba! Why are they trying to blow up her neighbor's house tonight?

The men aren't telling as the match gets closer to the wick . . . What Madeline doesn't know will hurt her the most. This is no ordinary plot. It's bigger than 9/11 and far more devastating. The Black Stone Plot has been two thousand years in the making.

The Boston Blue - A Screenplay
A Sports Drama for the New Millennium

By Jessie Jamie Coleman

It's the sports story of the century! The Chicago Voyagers, NBA champions and The Boston Blue, WNBA champions are the dream teams in this acclaimed sports story. The author, Jessie Jamie Coleman, does an excellent job at challenging the notion that men are better at sports than women by pitting the NBA against the WNBA. That premise alone would have been enough to keep readers turning pages, but the author does not stop there. The drama begins with Jay Byrd, star player of the Chicago Voyagers, appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show days after the championship game. At this point, we don t know who won this game that went down in history. Jay then takes us back to the beginning. Jay Byrd is charismatic, witty and every bit as good at his game as one might assume. He makes a promise to his dying mother not to break the heart of his first love. With every intention of honoring that promise, Jay finds himself drawn to WNBA champion, Jessie Winters, star player of the Boston Blue. Jessie Winters is talented, beautiful and adamant about always doing what s right. And the chemistry between the two is perfect and offers excellent contrast. When they meet for the first time, sparks sizzle immediately. Jessie does, however, find Jay a little cocky for her type, but she doesn t dismiss him totally. To make things more complicated for Jessie, Jay vacillates between his first love and the woman he always wanted to love, Jessie Winters. Though this script takes to the court with all the fervor, spark, and talent a crowd loves to see in a championship game, the meat of the story is the buildup to this big game. And be forewarned, the ending is not what you might expect, but nevertheless, you will be fascinated and satisfied.

The Brown Curtains
By Clive Sankardayal

In this his debut novel, Sankardayal has succeeded in crafting a work of genius. His portrayal of the racial disharmony that has characterized his homeland, Guyana, is mirrored glaringly in the daring of a young Indo-Guyanese emigrant to a neighboring Caribbean island as he breaks with tradition by taking a Black (African) bride. It is a little story of a huge problem told by someone who has encountered a new reality of social integration that calls into question the sanity of old customs—"You fossilized piece of shit" as Raj refers to a fellow emigrant in a fit of rage. Indeed, Sankardayal has produced an insightful, persuasive and entertaining work of art. His narrative skills, characterization and purposefulness combine to make this book a must-read for all racial strands, especially the people of Indian and African culture who inhabit these islands of the archipelago (or elsewhere in the diaspora). The Brown Curtains is a powerful, scholarly and critical commentary on race, culture and religion and the uncompromising influence of love.

Looking back ten years ago, who would have ever thought that this well-respected -- and very well-paid -- thirty-five-year-old assistant principal for a performing arts school, would trade in her husband and her daughter, a two-story brick home in a gated community, and a fully-equipped Jaguar for a body riddled with track marks and a substance that gave her a better feeling than sex.

But when that candy, as she knows it, finally runs out, Faith resorts to the "desperate times, calls for desperate measures" solution, which will have her playing Russian roulette with the angel of death. And sooner than later, these episodes will catch up with her so that she will be forced to make some life-altering choices -- but will it be too late?

Captain Rakehell (Large Print)
By Lynn Michaels

Marriage to such a lord was a fate worse than death! True, Amanda Gilbertson hadn't seen the toad-eating wretch since they were both children, but that didn't stop her from spending the Duchess of Braxton's party hiding in a tree to avoid the loathsome man. But Fate played its delightful hand that evening when she found herself in the potent midnight embrace of the black-masked Captain Rakehell. He was a thief, no doubt, but a romantic dream-come-true compared to the ridiculous fop who had just been announced as Lesley Earnshaw, her betrothed. Amanda knew her preordained future would change forever, if she could only determine the true identity of the notorious Captain Rakehell.

Clawed Back from the Dead
by John F. Rooney

A vicious killer is murdering the key people involved in the making of the movie "Nine Lives, Two Men," the true story of the battle between New York City detective Denny Delaney and the terrorist bomber Felix the Cat. It was Delaney who ushered Felix to his death in a Grand Central tunnel after Felix's terrorist rampage in the prequel to "Clawed" entitled "Nine Lives Too Many." The reader is in for some surprises as well as a roller-coaster ride as this thriller careens and caroms on its suspenseful track. The book revisits Denny's Manhattan and reacquaints readers with characters from the earlier book. There are humorous morsels in the story as well as grub for show biz junkies. Code Green
By Greg Jenkins

"I was having lunch with Dexter DeWitt. This in itself was a questionable activity on my part." So begins Code Green, by Greg Jenkins, whose anti-hero Chip Stone engages in quite a few questionable activities.

Stone is a male nurse who works in a psychiatric hospital and has almost as many behavioral issues as the residents he cares for. Those residents include DeWitt, a one-time cultural critic gone bonkers; Tim Valentine, who snacks on light bulbs; Philip Nolan, who contends (correctly) that he's actually a character in a novel; and Glinda Moon, an anorexic witch.

As the violence at his workplace intensifies, the confused Stone lights out on a desperate but comical odyssey to find his estranged wife—and himself. His wanderings take him through the netherworld of western Maryland, where he meets old friends, new enemies and one highly unusual sister-in-law. In the end, he discovers that the line between the sane and the not-so-sane is more gossamer than even he had suspected.

With its over-the-top characters and gaudy, entertaining prose, Code Green offers a bumptious blend of humor and pathos well-suited to the uncertainties of a new millennium.

Color Him Father
Stories of Love and Rediscovery of Black Men

By Stephana I. Colbert & Valerie I. Harrison

Color Him Father: Stories of Love and Rediscovery of Black Men is both a tribute to and a celebration of Black fathers. Seeking more positive, balanced images of African-American men than the news media seems to allow, the editors embarked on a journey to collect true, anecdotal narratives about Black fathers from those who love them. While the attention of the news media is often on Black men who struggle on the one hand, and on the superstar athletes and entertainers on the other, Color Him Father adds our everyday heroes to the landscape - the countless Black men, despite the legacy of slavery and racism, are responsible, committed leaders in their homes and their communities. In these stories, authors share intimate and loving secrets that paint a portrait of Black men as productive role models. What emerges is a message of hope, for Black children and Black families.

The 36 contributing authors represent a diverse assortment of children, mates and friends of all ages and stations in life, and include noted authors, Clifton Taulbert, Stephanie Stokes Oliver, and Venise Berry; Lawrence Douglas Wilder, Jr., son of former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder; and leading theologian and author Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

The depth and breadth of these wonderful stories - some tender, other raw-present all the different "colors" of Black fathers, and will inspire, move, and make the reader smile. Simply put, the reader will enjoy a good book.

Cross Roads
By Carl Patterson

Southern Pines, North Carolina, is supposed to be a place where you can raise your children and not worry about safety. That was true until single mother Dorothy and her two sons, Bobby and Johnny, have to abandon their hometown when death comes knocking on their door. In a quest to flee after her best friend and mother-in-law are murdered, Dorothy hastily relocates her kids from their beloved community in the south to the gang- and drug-infested streets of Bedford Stuyvesant, New York.

Brooklyn breeds a new batch of worries as the younger son, Bobby, joins a vicious street gang. As Bobby struggles with the peer pressure of the ghetto—drug hustlers, prostitutes, gang violence, shootouts, and stabbings—his brother, Johnny, plans to kill the woman who gave him life.

Cross Roads is a classic timepiece set in the 1950s but is reminiscent of modern times. Just as the Bishops and Chaplins fought for territory back then, Bloods and Crips wage the same wars in today's society. This inspiring coming-of-age story details how a young boy is forced to become a man while fighting for his life and the safety of his family.

Death by Fire
By Dr. Anderson Reynolds

Set in the picturesque Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Death by Fire is an epic novel in which natural calamities, historical events, supernatural forces, and betrayed love all combine in deciding the fate of its characters. It is a profound statement on the nature of fate and the forces that shape society. A story that is as compelling and spellbinding as the island (in which it is set) is beautiful.

Death by Fire brings to mind the novels of William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, and Jamaica Kincaid.

* Reviews *

"The telling of the story is exceptional . . . extremely difficult to put it down . . . a seething cauldron of love, lust, hate and disaster . . . a cunningly-woven tale of people; their tribulations, passions, loves, frustrations, and the intricate way in which they touched and influenced each other . . . a journey back into St. Lucian life . . . (which) paints the dark side of the struggle for survival in a young country." The Voice

"This is a novel on a grand scale . . . a broad canvas of St. Lucian life . . . in which the social, economic, political, and personal tensions are profound statements on the nature of our island society, and one which is required reading for anyone seeking a greater understanding of what is happening today, and who might wish to shape a better society for future generations. If one is looking for a key to the feeling and conscience of the age in which we live, this novel is a guide." The Crusader

Death by Fire is an impressive piece of narration . . . a veritable tapestry of St. Lucian life and culture . . . educates the reader on the social, economic and political modes of existence of the inhabitants in the post–slavery/emancipation periods through to the early 19th and into the 20th century. . . Reading it left me with a seething appetite for more. Easily one of the most compelling pieces of literature I have laid hands on in recent years." Modeste Downes—author of Phases

Alden Homer and Blake Whitman, the main characters in
Déjà Vu, are traveling their own paths, which seem to cross more frequently than usual for two dissimilar guys on the road in Asia.  Their thoughts and experiences are pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that the reader can assemble.  Alden, who experimented with drugs during his Ivy League days, is now in his 50's.  He has passed through Wall Street and sacrificed a marriage to his literary aspirations.  Searching for the Muse, he'll settle for enlightenment.  Blake, the narrator, is taking a year off before medical school, and is enthusiastically seeking the adventure he could only read about -- or see in the movies -- back home in Middle America.  He chases the Exotic.  Independently or together, these two colorful characters encounter a nymphomaniac, a murder victim, Christian fundamentalists, Hindu holy men, inmates at a mental institution, and a yeti  -- not to mention their own dreams.

Guildworks
Writings by the West Side Writers Guild
By Mark Allen Boone (other contributer)

“With its slick cover, solid editing, and often compelling work, Guildworks: Writings by the West Side Writers Guild bears few signs of self-publication,” said the Literary Supplement of NEW CITY, Chicago’s arts and entertainment weekly.

An unusual anthology of works by natives of Chicago’s toughest and poorest section, a locale that fosters people who gain strength from adversity, Guildworks’ highlights include poet Cranston Knight’s “You Ain’t Got No Culture,” in which he “disses” a friend for his lack of refinement, only to end by praising him for his loyalty; Boone’s “A Visit to the Poe House,” that recounts his harrowing search for the poet’s Baltimore row house located in the heart of a drug den; Irene J. Smith’s novel excerpt that sets the stage for the late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington’s 1983 mayoral campaign; and Tina Jenkins Bell’s lighthearted account of the sexual harassment she encountered on the road as a publishing sales representative.

Distemper
By James Nulick

When Drew Estrada, a young teacher, suddenly finds himself the legal guardian of Tre Warner, a popular student, his life becomes torn apart by desire. In this imaginative, accomplished novel about sex, murder, and skateboards, reality becomes increasingly unclear. Is Tre a real person or a hallucinatory product of Drew's damaged soul? Distemper is ultimately a meditation on the illusory nature of love. National Book Award Winner William T. Vollmann has called this book "a beautifully written catalogue of various kinds of unhappiness." Josh Aterovis, author of the Killian Kendall Mystery Series, says, "Nulick's debut novel almost reads like poetry. He understands that the Devil is in the details… but so is the Deity."

"This is a lovely fantasy, reminiscent of "Watership Down," with a dash of the "Ugly Duckling" thrown in. Magic, quests, the fight between good and evil, they are all here, with dragons as the protagonists, but with all too human emotions. ...A great read for any age." ~ Reviewed by Annette Gisby, author of "Writing the Dream."

"[Dragon's Moon] is full of wondrous creatures and adventures. As our little dragon is constantly being led by his conscience, this is a wonderful tool for children as they learn to recognize wrong from right. ...the land of Nistala will definitely engage a child's imagination. • Face Down in the Marrow-Bone Pie (Large Print)
    By Kathy Lynn Emerson

"Today's letter was not a summons to serve Queen Elizabeth. It came from Lancashire. John Bexwith, my steward at Appleton Manor, is dead."

Susanna frowned, surprised that this news should have affected her husband so strongly. "The man was quite elderly," she said hesitantly, "was he not?"

"Your memory is excellent," Robert told her, absently tucking an unruly lock of dark brown hair back up under her brocaded cap. "He was found face down in a marrow-bone pie."

With that incredible statement, Robert placed the letter in his wife's outstretched hand.

Face Down in the Marrow-Bone Pie is a delightfully cozy Elizabethan mystery introducing Susanna, Lady Appleton. When her husband's steward dies in a unique, ignominious, and highly suspicious manner, Susanna takes advantage of her husband's absence on a political mission for Queen Elizabeth to investigate Bexwith's mysterious demise.

The serving wench who found Bexwith claims that he was frightened to death by a ghost, but Susanna can think of several poisons that could have been concealed in the marrow-bone pie. (Susanna is something of an expert on poisons, having been inspired by her sister's fatal encounter with some poisonous berries to write a cautionary herbal for housewives.)

Even if Bexwith was poisoned, was it accidental or intentional? As if the case weren't complicated enough, Susanna must also unmask a "ghost"-- or are the ghost and the poisoner one and the same?

Kathy Lynn Emerson's debut Elizabethan mystery will delight as it introduces you to a sixteenth-century husband's worst nightmare: an intelligent, no-nonsense wife who happens to know hundreds of poisons.

Face Down upon an Herbal marks the return of Susanna, Lady Appleton, an Elizabethan woman who literally wrote the book on poisons. While her husband is away on a diplomatic mission to Scotland, Susanna is summoned by Queen Elizabeth to work on a new book of botanical decoctions at Madderly Castle. But when the herbalist learns that a pugnacious Scots baron has been found murdered atop the herbal that she has authored, she realizes that there is more to the queen's request. Then the killer strikes again, and strong-minded Susanna takes matters into her own hands and investigates the dastardly deeds. To uncover the truth, however, she must answer some vexing questions: Why are Lord Madderly and the local authorities so quick to blame an outside intruder? How are the deaths linked to a forger who specializes in noble genealogies? Is the murderer part of a treasonous conspiracy against the queen? Faced with a host of suspects who are not as they seem, Susanna must work quickly to find the killer's identity - before she becomes his or her next victim.

    Far in Noetrea
    By Lucian Leonte

Now financially self-sufficient, still young, and happily married, Stefan is ready to embark on an occupation true to his desires, but what that might be turns into an alienating question. To break the incapacitating deadlock he sets out for Noetrea, a faraway land, where people are said to live according to a different set of assumptions. Once there, he has to learn too quickly of the customs and unambivalent laws, just like the few other outlanders who made the trip, Kal, his parallel ego, included. Otherwise the system appears benign and highly efficient. From the glowing populace to the immaculate architecture and the antiseptic surround, Noetrea is world’s apart from the coarseness of his home place. But what Stefan is being absorbed by is the curious sense of legacy embedded in all the abundant products and representations, from utilitarian objects to artwork and to the omnipresent statues, and that ties into the very question he is wrestling with. Nefri, the local girl, may provide the insight, for a price. Eventually, he learns why Nothingness may have inspired his explorations. Included are seven restored sketches, as documents remaining from the journey.

    The Glass Heart
    By  Kathleen A. Killion

How would you describe the colors of your heart? Are the colors bright or dark… swirled or solid? No matter what colors you imagine, believing in the beauty of your heart is the message of the newly released book, The Glass Heart.

In the vein of childhood classics such as Cinderella, The Glass Heart takes readers on a quest to find true love. In this fable, a young girl trades her beautiful glass heart for another to please others. Readers may relate this to the everyday experiences of bowing to peer pressure, fitting in with the "right" crowd, or changing to be like others.

At the girl's request, a glassblower makes her a new, beautiful, jeweled, glass heart but it soon becomes a burden to carry. After experiencing several adventures of the heart, the girl ultimately returns to her safe and trusted place, the home of the glassblower, where she discovers the beauty of her own heart.

For girls struggling to find their way through the often turbulent tween, teen, or young adult years, The Glass Heart is the perfect story to point out the importance of being true to one's self. For parents looking to find innovative ways to celebrate individuality amongst their children or for anyone looking to make a heartsick friend look toward a bright future, this book is the perfect gift.

"This is a story about finding and celebrating one's true self," says St. Louis-based author Kathleen A. Killion. "It is the most important journey in anyone's life and sometimes the most difficult. It is my hope that this book will inspire people to celebrate their own unique personalities and talents through the universal messages related in the story."

Killion's story is magically brought to life through a series of watercolor illustrations by St. Louis artist and art school teacher Gary M. Lang. Making a conscious decision not to give any physical attributes to the characters in the story, "The Glass Heart" allows readers of all ages and backgrounds to use their imaginations and place themselves in images that relate to their own life journey.

While doing various school presentations, Killion has amassed dozens of pictures of hearts drawn by children after they've heard The Glass Heart. "Kids more often than not know exactly what the color of their true heart is," says Killion. "Ironically, adults are more hesitant and less in touch when describing their hearts. Ultimately, it is the job of parents, teachers, coaches and other adults in nurturing roles to help children find the swirls of colors unique to each child reflecting a rainbow of individuality and contentment." Killion now is working to develop a traveling display of the heart pictures, with one exhibit already planned for the St. Louis Science
    Center.

As Killion takes her educational message about self-love on the road, she is also planning to link similar programs for youth on self-esteem, sportsmanship and bullying prevention. The Glass Heart Foundation has been set up, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book going toward foundation programs.

Questions Killion often asks during her programs:
How many of you have had words hurt your heart?
How many of you have used words that may have hurt other hearts?
Who is your "safe person" like the glassblower in the story?
Tell me what makes you and your heart special?

    Green 61
    An Anderson Parker Legal Thriller
    by Cody Fowler Davis

Justin Cartwright II is a real bastard of a lawyer and he's not much more attractive as a person. In court, he tends to skate right up to the edge of what's ethical and is not averse to slipping over if it means winning a case. Anderson Parker is just the opposite; bright, resourceful, and integrity is his middle name. No wonder it's so satisfying when Parker tells Cartwright, who happens to be his boss, to take his job and… well, you get the picture.
It's also something like poetic justice when, after the rift, these two attorneys face off on opposite sides of a legal battle in which two young children and an adult man have been killed in a boating accident. We know who's responsible. What we don't know is whether they will be brought to justice. With Cartwright's nasty tactics, and a bungling third party's lawyer, we're in suspense right up to the end.
Green 61 is a real "I know it's late, but I just don't want to put it down" kind of a book. It's all the more so because it was written by a successful attorney who knows the legal system inside and out, and is well acquainted with the tactics—savory and less so—of those who work in it. It's authentic, it's believable, and it's absolutely engaging from the first sentence through to the last.
If an intriguing story and spending time inside the heads of real characters is what you're looking for, you have found it in Green 61.

    Half Moon
    By K. L. Vidal

Half Moon, a hauntingly beautiful saga set in Paris, New York, and Atlantic Canada, explores themes of passion, betrayal, art and redemption in the story of an elusively beautiful woman and the world-class painter obsessed with creating her portrait.

    Summary:

June. Orly Airport. Unprecedented heat wave gripping the city. Among the passengers just arrived from New York is Mrs. Caroline Devereux. She is noticed at once, not just for her singular beauty but for the long skirt and black turtleneck so inappropriate in such blistering heat.

A native of Buenos Aires, graduate of Yale University, sole heir to her father's estate in Connecticut, Mrs. Devereux has come to France for the funeral of an uncle. Her only acquaintance in Paris is her cousin. Unaccompanied, she waits for him in the Crillon lounge that night, where once again, even more than her outfit, her enigmatic allure is observed. Among those intrigued is Jude McCallister – lionized, wealthy, world-class portraitist par excellence. As the music plays on he finds himself somehow, disturbingly, driven to paint the remarkable woman staring back at him, ever-silent.

What follows is the story of Jude and Caroline Devereux. Obsessed, Jude pursues her across Paris. She agrees to a portrait, dressed despite the lingering heat in a pale turtleneck and long skirt. After a week, he persuades her to leave these clothes in his mirrored changing room, bringing others to wear after their sittings. Thus it is that Caroline finally confronts her nakedness. She stares at the burn tissue on her neck, ribs, hips, inner thighs; she studies the half-moon scar on her right breast; she finds, to her utter astonishment, that in its exquisite proportions, alluring shape and uniqueness, her body is splendid, although she had hidden it from both the world and her own eyes since a barn fire engulfed her in her old childhood ranch.

Transformed by her insights and freed at last from all fear, Caroline returns to Jude's studio. Stunned, he senses that the formerly aloof Mrs. Devereux wishes to pose for him naked. In the ensuing sitting, she recounts her agonized tale of pain, repression, and, in his studio, revelation. All this and more Jude transforms onto his canvas, creating his masterpiece: a nude, scarred, glorious woman called Half Moon.

In a sweeping tale at once erotic, suspenseful, and profoundly psychological, Vidal traces the fortunes of both the McCallister masterpiece and the uniquely sensual woman who inspired it. Elegantly written, the story takes us from Paris to Normandy, New England, Manhattan and the vividly scenic shores of Atlantic Canada. Characters vie for both the masterpiece and Mrs. Devereux's heart. In their desires for one or the other they interact; in their rivalries, they confront their own past; in the common thread that unites them all, Half Moon, as both metaphor for the transforming power of art and symbol for the redemptive forces of love, casts its own indefinable spell upon the reader. Mrs. Devereux's journey from shame through self-acceptance to an extraordinary, even majestic self-realization lingers long after the last page of her story is rendered. So, too, does the music of Vidal's prose, fitting accompaniment for the book's richly textured panorama of compassion, yearning, great-hearted survival and enduring fulfillment.

    Hollywood and Sunset
    A Novel

    By Luke Salisbury

Henry Harrison, writer and baseball club owner, believes he has the goods on D. W. Griffith.

The author of an influential article in the Atlantic Monthly denouncing Griffith for the racism in Birth of a Nation, Henry has come to Hollywood with his family to interview Griffith and put the final nails in the famed director's coffin.

But Henry finds himself subject to a few . . . distractions. His wife has just told him she's in love with another man. Henry's Hollywood tour guide turns out to be an English actor who drives his Model T through Los Angeles dressed like Jesus Christ, the better to seduce women. Lillian Gish, Griffith's virginal star, may be trying to seduce Henry. And Griffith himself may not be quite the villain that Henry has imagined.

In a little over 48 hours, Harry undergoes a personal trial by fire that ends unexpectedly in Babylon, the extraordinary movie set Griffith constructed for the film he believed would be his masterpiece, Intolerance.

Luke Salisbury, the author of an acclaimed book on baseball and two previous works of fiction, has captured the madness and allure of Hollywood's early years in Hollywood and Sunset.

Pulitzer Prize–winning author Tracy Kidder says of Hollywood and Sunset, "This is a rare thing—a truly entertaining novel with soul."

Salisbury, a resident of Chelsea, Mass., who teaches English at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, first came to national attention with The Answer Is Baseball, published in 1989 by Times Books and considered a classic among sports books. His first novel, The Cleveland Indian, was nominated for the Casey Award for best baseball book in 1992. He also published Blue Eden, a collection of short stories, in 1994.

    By Thomas Hudgin

Everything you always wanted to know about special etc. 442X

This high-paced intrigue, skillfully woven by experienced pilot, sailor and retired Navy Commander, Tom Hudgin, will captivate adult and young adult readers.

Tom Hannaford finds mysterious lettering on a barnacle encrusted plank floating in the surf along a deserted North Carolina beach. With insatiable curiosity and after some questionable research, Tom convinces his friend, Chris, to fly with him in Tom's Cessna Cardinal on a leisurely vacation in the Bahamas near where, coincidentally, Tom suspects his message from the sea originated. When they decide to land to investigate remote Cat Island, they stumble upon a quite shocking discovery that sends them running for their very lives, using all their skills and cunning just trying to survive. A lovable thirteen year old island boy, who had hustled them at the George Town airport, then unexpectedly twists the plot to an exciting climax.

Those interested in flying will agree with Tom Benenson, editor of Flying Magazine who says "Rarely do authors, who include flying sequences in their novels, get it right. Tom Hudgin, in Incident at Cat Island, has filled his mystery/suspense novel with enough aviation details to keep any pilot happy."

    From the Publisher
I've had many interesting authors but Tom is unique. He is a pleasure to meet and to get to know as a friend. His easy conversational style that has made him a success as a highly sought-after motivational speaker carries over into his exciting novel. Anyone who longingly dreams of a vacation in the blissful Bahamas or who loves flying or sailing will find much to love here, but don't be surprised if your hoped-for vacation isn't so peaceful.

    From the Author
I've always dreamed of sailing high seas and exploring tropical islands. Ever since I could remember, I'd sit on the beach searching the southern Carolina horizon for some illusive tropical paradise.

After college, I received an officer's commission in the U.S. Navy and sailed the Pacific Ocean on tankers and repair ships. That valuable experience gained in deep-water navigation and seamanship skills was put to use again years later.

I earned my wings as an instrument-rated, private pilot and bought my first airplane. Every opportunity I had, I'd fly to the tropical islands of the Bahamas and often rent a sailboat to explore the secluded, coconut-lined, white, sandy beaches of the central islands - Abaco, Eleuthera, Exumas, Long Island and Cat Island.

My tenacious passion for the sea continued in retirement. I purchased a thirty-foot sloop and sailed it up and down the East Coast of the United States and to the islands of the Bahamas. Itching to do more serious, blue water cruising, I sailed with two others a thirty-six-foot ketch from the islands of the Caribbean to Europe.

This novel is fiction but the places mentioned and flying experiences are real ... the characters and events are not. I have a high degree of respect and love for the folks of the Bahamas. They're proud, honest people and truly live in a paradise unequaled anywhere in the world. Having been to and explored tranquil Cat Island, it seemed to be an intriguing setting for this tale.

"Catholic in more ways than just religious (what could be more "catholic" than the whole universe?), the theme of this collection lets the writers explore visions too dangerous for most anthologies. Just Your Everyday People
By Fred Yager & Jan Yager

    Reviews:

"Just Your Everyday People isn't your everyday read.  It's a sneaky little thriller that explores the underside of suburban life in a way that contrasts the mundane with the horrible.  Populated with very real and familiar characters, the novel will make you see in a different way the people you pass in the mall or who stand next to you in the supermarket checkout line.  A walk on the dark side." ~ John Lutz, best-selling novelist, Single White Female.

"The friendship between two married couples begins to unravel when on of the wives seduces a stranger in a bar.  Blackmail, betrayal and murder ensue, and the danger seems to come from all directions." ~ Publishers Weekly.

    The Last Bad Decision
    By Paula Edwards

Meet Chancey.  From the good looks and a charm that would make even a Christian girl fall to her knees, to the flamboyant lifestyle, thanks to his boy Rondell, one of the most successful drug dealers the Jordan Down Projects has ever seen, Chancey's got it going on.

Chancey's tired of his way of life and wants a change. But deep down inside, he's insecure and hopeless, and feels unworthy of a better lifestyle...at least that's what his mother tells him.  So instead of sitting around, harping over something he fears to be absolutely impossible, he puts on his mask and gives in to the streets, believing this is the only way he can survive.

    Letters to Allie
    By Jackie Gould

In the Gould family archives lie the fading love letters of Grandfather Martin, written in fine script to his future wife, Allie, who was 20 years his junior. Dated 1895, the letters are now over 100 years of age, yet the tentative, formal, Victorian vocabulary sheds light upon the girl to whom they were written.

Martin and Allie were separated by some 90 miles — and the gossip of her townspeople, who were scandalized by Martin's previous divorce. As Allie struggles to overcome the acid tongues of her community, the two are kept together by only their letters, which, in keeping with propriety, refrained from obvious references of love being written down for all to see. Instead, they were filled with veiled references to the emotions that Martin dared not commit to paper.

In reading and rereading the letters, author Jackie Gould began to imagine what those times were like, and her curiosity was piqued to know more about the young woman to whom the letters were addressed. Her only clues were gleaned from the letters that Martin wrote to his Allie, and as she read and reread the letters, Allie and her story came to life. The letters in this book are real, but the story from Allie's point of view is imagined. However, the young girl's spirit will invade your thoughts as she whispers to you about her life and times, and the love story between Allie and Martin unfolds.

Jackie Gould grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Patricia Stevens Modeling School and taught a charm school before marrying her high school sweetheart. Together, they raised two sons and pursued several business endeavors, including a music school and store and a wholesale furniture showroom. Jackie has studied art and interior design, and loves animals and, of course, writing. She and her family have live in Phoenix, Arizona since 1969. Letters to Allie is her first book to be published.

    Light Bread
    By Cordell Adams

"Light Bread, a first novel by Cordell Adams, weaves a lovely story around the tumultuous 1960s in his creation of Veola Cook--a brave, Black earth mother of wisdom, warmth and wit. But Veola has the strength of goodness and godliness to offer love and comfort to those in need, regardless of the danger she faces, regardless of the unrest in America...and regardless of the color of the many who depend on her."
--Billie Letts, Where the Heart Is (an Oprah Book Club selection), and MADE IN THE USA

"We all know her. That go-to person for all our troubles. And in his debut novel, Light Bread, Cordell Adams gives readers that person in the form of Veola Cook, who just about everyone in Parkerville, Texas, comes to count on when they need a little homespun wisdom and propping up. Adams has created a warm, caring, colorful and insightful character who will be a delight for readers. A woman with the wisdom to avoid trouble and the insight to handle it, if it rears its ugly head."
--Robert Greer, author of seven novels in the CJ Floyd mystery series (the latest two, The Mongoose Deception and Blackbird, Farewell), two medical thrillers, and a short story collection.

    Mary's Child
    By Celia A. Leaman

After being incarcerated in a workhouse for thirteen years following the death of her mother, Mary Jay is apprenticed out to a farm on Dartmoor. She has no idea that the same man who darkened her mother's life will now threaten her own newfound freedom.

"I couldn't help comparing "Tess of the D'urbervilles" to "Mary's Child" as I read, and I must admit that Leaman's novel captures the flavor of that era equally well while reaching a far more satisfactory conclusion. I heartily recommend "Mary's Child." ~ Cindy Penn, Senior Editor, Wordweaving.

"Though the novel depicts the grim reality of a time when life was terribly hard for the common people, especially for women, and though dark tragedy mars its unfolding, "Mary's Child" is a moving, even hopeful, book. I cannot recommend it highly enough." ~ Jane Bowers, Romance Reviews Today.

    Memoirs of a Shape-Shifter
    By Thomas Kaplan-Maxfield

The growing popularity of "chick-lit"—the cute term for the emerging genre of female-centric fiction—tends to pit its harsh critics against a flock of eager readers. The detractors, many of them feminists, charge that such works exploit the worst stereotypes of modern-day women, depicting them as interested in nothing more than shopping, losing weight, or finding the right man. Accusations center around the books' simplistic plots, treacly love scenarios and vapid leading characters.

Memoirs of a Shape-Shifter offers a variation on chick-lit: a literary novel, written by a man, with a fully configured female lead character. In giving centrality to a female protagonist and refreshing attention to women's inner lives, its plot is an answer to the frequent criticism that modern novels—even those written by women—do not do justice to the real challenges faced by women today. Yet this particular male author twists the prevailing wisdom whether called "male" or "female," bringing a darker perspective to common fairy tale notions of love.

In taking up the difficulties of love experienced by real women in contemporary America, Kaplan-Maxfield vividly penetrates the complex soul of a modern everywoman in protagonist Nikki Helmik. Provocatively enacting the mystery at the heart of the book—the power of words to make magic—he stands our conventional understanding of power on its head.

    Mystery at Clareton Manor
    By Kathleen Newberg

When retired Columbia, SC, detective Molly May accepts an invitation from her old friend, Erika Bischoff, for a complimentary, week-long visit to the Clareton Manor Wellness Spa, she never suspects she'll be back to sleuthing by the second day. Financially challenged Erika recently opened the rural upstate South Carolina spa, which promotes relaxation and stress reduction to a well-heeled clientele. The guests were shocked, but a few of them not truly surprised, when Ruger is found murdered in his room.

The small town chief detective is called in but is shadowed by Molly, who exposes other crimes as she covertly sorts the convoluted clues to Ruger's murder. So disliked was Ruger that suspects abound and include the spa guests and staff, Clareton townsfolk—and even Molly's friend, Erika Bischoff. Highly regarded state-wide for her detective prowess, Molly May is a student of human nature. She knows that there is good and bad in everyone and that, ninety-nine percent of the time, it's best not to tell all you know.

    Nate
    A Novel

    By P. Lewis

Nathan James Morris: a talented, ambitious black kid from P.G. County, Maryland. He wants to be an illustrator. But at 19, he has been expelled from Freedom College for alleged misconduct. He has few friends, aside from the parasitic Guy Sellers; and save for his scholarship's chump change, even fewer dollars. Hurt, angry, and in desperate need of cash, he joins the Marines. "The road to manhood is paved with tanks and convoys!" he loudly boasts.

But he soon discovers that his own "road" has been paved with far more unpleasant things: whimsical officers, endless bomb attacks, disease, an unbelievable desolation. After the military, his "road" gets rockier....an unhappy reuniting with family, friends and fiancée....a kidnapping in Turkey ....violent confrontations with neo-Nazis and racist North Africans....his studies and miseries at C.S.U., America's most prestigious black university, and his final days in a DC slum, as witness to (and participant in) the wild destruction of his older brother's marriage, with a little help from the one "friend" who never seems to leave him be: Guy Sellers.

At turns eloquent, elegant, explosive, raw, obscene, shockingly brutal and wildly funny, NATE is a brilliant meditation on what it means to be young, black and male in today's world.

    One Last Dance
It's Never Too Late to Fall in Love

    By Mardo Williams

A story about finding love at any age, One Last Dance is the delightful tale of Morgan, aged 89, and Dixie, 79, two "mature" individuals on seemingly divergent paths. Despite their disastrous first meeting, complete with a ruined birthday cake, broken eyeglasses and insulting remarks, it was obvious to bystanders, even then, that the two were fated for each other.

Dixie and Morgan begin to date and ultimately decide to move in together – for economic reasons, they agree. But the business-only relationship changes and strengthens as the couple unites to combat illness, scandal, and a near-fatal accident. The story also reveals how past insecurities, humiliations, and fears can haunt a person throughout his days. Dixie fears intimacy. Morgan has concealed important details about his divorce, his estranged children, and his lost job. And all the while, a mysterious stranger lurks, bent on vengeance for past wrongs. He invades their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets and lies.

Written with great humor and a deep understanding of the challenges associated with aging in America, One Last Dance is a joy to read and an inspiration to all generations, reminding us to live every day and always be in search of new experiences, regardless of age.

After a distinguished career as journalist and author (for which he won an Ohioana Library Award), Mardo Williams completed the first draft of this novel at age 95. He asked his daughters, Kay and Jerri (both writers), to finish the book if he could not. He died a few weeks later. His daughters honored their father's wishes.

    Praise for One Last Dance:

"Who better than Mardo Williams to convey the uncertainty and fulfillment of love between senior citizens? While promoting his 1996 book Maude (1883-1993): She Grew Up with the Country, he met a woman who became his live-in companion… Williams' writing shows a ready wit, and neither Dixie nor Morgan is spared from comic consequences. In the first scene, Dixie gets creamed with a birthday cake; later, Morgan finds himself wiping a guest's spilled wine with a pair of Dixie's lace-trimmed underpants. One Last Dance is charming and touching. That the main characters are willful and stubborn does little to diminish their appeal." Lynne Sherwin, Akron Beacon-Journal

"His final deadline came too soon, but Mardo Williams made sure his novel had a happy ending. One Last Dance, a wry, Columbus-based novel about late-in-life romance… includes conflict, mystery, and scandal. His newspaper-writing style is concise, heavy on dialogue, and leavened with humor." Mark Ellis, Columbus Dispatch

"One Last Dance is a lovely story that at times is very touching and at other times very funny. Dixie and Morgan share their more intimate thoughts and concerns [giving the reader]… a unique insight into the lives of older folks. If we were rating this book on a scale of 1-10, we would give it a 10+. We loved it." Betty Stumbo, Ontario Tribune-Courier

"A sweepingly elegant romance, One Last Dance celebrates the importance of living in the moment and never giving up in the search for love. Emotion and hope surge from the pages, in this novel that leaves the reader feeling invigorated and enthusiastic about life." Jim Cox, MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

"One Last Dance is a fun book and so true. It correctly highlights some of the medical, financial and social struggles senior citizens face today." Brenda Donegan, The Marion Star

"The secret to eternal youth—as One Last Dance shows with eloquence, grace, and unsentimental wit—isn't exercise or Lipitor but falling in love—and it's never too late." Ralph Gardner, Jr., The New York Observer

"I loved it. The intrigue added by Morgan's questionable past and the suspense created by the vengeful stranger made me keep reading. One Last Dance also captures young people at risk while demonstrating that with help, caring, and luck, they don't have to become throw away kids. It's really a book for all ages." Leslie Snyder, master English teacher and Hall of Fame inductee

"I especially liked the way the relationship with the ‘lost' grandson turned out. Not only did he save their lives, but he brought them the love and pride they'd lost many decades before with their loss of their children. I cared about the characters." Sharon White, grandmother

"Loved the book! The characters are fun and true, the events are real and often scary, and the humor is lovely—very heartland, very human. It's a wise, real, good-humored book." PM Carlson, author of Deathwind

"One Last Dance is a rollicking good read. In the portraits of Dixie and Morgan, readers of a certain age will recognize picture-perfect portraits of themselves—and find it difficult not to laugh. At the same time, this very well written novel provides younger readers with a real insight into why ‘seniors' think and act as they do. This is one of those rare books which truly bring the generations together." Albert Ashforth, author

    One Nation Under God
    By Vincent M. Wales

In the year 2021, eleven-year old Mary Christopher is the spunky daughter of the latest President vowing to return America to its righteous roots. Her mother is a well-known "family values" activist, and her "Uncle" Gene Sisco is head of the largest evangelical Christian organization in the land. Against the backdrop of an America where Christian fundamentalism has brought about tremendous change in Washington, Mary's is a conflicted coming-of-age story, in which she questions everything from her faith to her sexuality, and ultimately becomes one more victim of her father's repressive legislation.

Other figures in her life include: Jude, an atheist Mary befriends on the Internet; Vicki, the girl at camp for whom Mary develops confusing feelings; J. E. Cooper, the freelance reporter who labels Gene Sisco the most dangerous man in America; and Jefferson Paine, the mysterious figure behind the infamous Voice of Reason website, dedicated to challenging the Christopher administration at every turn.

The novel takes events from present-day and extrapolates them to a possible conclusion two short decades from now. The list of controversial topics in this fable is long, covering everything from radical education techniques to communal living, group marriages to the failings of religion. Yet, through it all, ONE NATION UNDER GOD maintains a positive world-view, a hope that our society might one day get its collective act together, before it's too late.

    The Persian Gulf Jeopardy
Lee Seigfried with Capt. Arthur S. Jensen, U.S. Navy (retired)

The Persian Gulf Jeopardy explores the clash of cultures in a high powered narrative set on the stage of international politics. The treatment of females in the armed services and in the Muslim world fuels this fast paced drama as two female naval officers with engineering backgrounds find themselves involuntarily thrust into servitude in a remote mountain sheikdom. This peek into the world of such a thoroughly male dominated society is eye-opening and thought-provoking. The novel unflinchingly details the duties of women as members of a harem who are expected to perform practical tasks during the day and satisfy pleasures of the flesh at night. The adventures of Lieutenant Alice Stephenson and Ensign Barbara Jason carry them to the races, Paradise Oasis, the castle of love, an island in the Red Sea, and the mysterious and ancient stone city of Petra al Hazir.

Talented but professionally dead-ended Ben Candidi is almost grateful when Chief Medical Examiner Westley fires him "for his own good."  Dr. Westley persuades Ben to enter the pharmacology Ph.D. program at nearby Bryan Medical School - and to conduct an undercover investigation of the sudden death of the School's Pharmacology chairman.  Dr. Westley believes it was murder-by-professor, using a poison that left no trace.  But with a half-dozen suspect profs, and with hundreds of their toxins and laboratory drugs to choose from, Ben finds the assignment next to impossible - until he meets a medical student named Rebecca Levis.

"An excellent whodunit ... a first class mystery that combines elements of Michael Crichton, Patricia Cornwell, and even Edna Buchanan." ~ Booklist Mystery Showcase, American Library Assn.

    The Portal
    By Keith White

Fasten your seatbelt, because from the moment the story takes off, it’s a thrill-a-minute ride through the Amazon wilderness, a World War II adventure, and a quick trip to the future . . . well, for us, the present. Love the characters or love to hate them, cheer the good guys, boo the bad. And limber up your fingers or you won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough to keep up. Jack Sullivan, all-around good guy, is tossed out of the Army Air Corps boot camp because of a long-past episode with asthma. He thought things couldn’t get much worse, then he’s forced to flee the country when he’s framed for the murder of an ex-girlfriend’s husband because the conniving cutie and Jack are caught together, sort of, well, naked.

      Purple Sun
An Epic Tale of War & Redemption
    By Lawrence McAuliffe

The story begins in 1968 in Vietnam. Master Sergeant Isaiah Ross and Lt. Patrick Gallo don't have much in common, but they share mutual concern about a twice-wounded young soldier who, they suspect, abandoned his unit while under enemy fire. Is it possible that the young man, whose name was Billy Kern, could still be alive?

After returning to civilian life, Ross and Gallo keep in touch for the next 30 years, finally deciding they must return to Vietnam to find out what really happened to Billy Kern. Their guide, Truong, is a former Viet Cong soldier who carries his own scars and memories. Their journey takes them to the Monastery of the Purple Sun, then back around the world to the mountains of Wyoming, where a small-town newspaper editor becomes entangled in the mystery. The plot takes as many twists and turns as the mountainous trails, with a surprise outcome.

The author, Lawrence McAuliffe, is a Boston resident who writes stories and plays. In 1968-'69, as a former Marine lieutenant, he returned to serve in Vietnam as a chaplain up along the DMZ, and is a disabled veteran of that conflict. Emerging from that experience, after years of reflecting on the suffering, meaning and worth of that long-ago war, is this redemptive, purgative story.

    The Red Column
A Young Woman's Capture, Imprisonment, and Escape in the Amazon Jungle
    By Wallace M. Kain

Jo Tartan, a high school girl from Sanibel Island, Florida, survived, against all odds, in the Peruvian Amazon. And she turned her scientist parents' expedition from a search for her into a scientific success. They found the obscure Nunca people, befriended them, and learned their secrets of enormous value, freedom from malaria and long life. Jo more than proved her mettle. Most important to her, she proved herself to expedition leader Mark Steiner who became the object of her young love. That story is told in Kain's novel, The Nunca Riddle.

A year later, the world is about to invade the shy, generous Nuncas people. In a noble but hopeless venture, the Tartans return to the Amazon to warn the Nuncas. Jo, her father and brother are captured and held for ransom by soldiers of the Red Column, Maoist guerillas bent on ruling Peru—a scenario playing out today.

The Red Column is the story of Jo's capture, imprisonment and escape. Also of the reentry into her life of Mark Steiner. It is the celebration of the guts, determination and ingenuity of this sometimes too daring young woman.

    Reluctant Miracle
    By Linda Sebastian

In our society, it's illegal to sell a kidney or a lung, but you can buy human reproductive material such as eggs and sperm. Reproductive technologies-- in vitro fertilization, cloning, and embryo transplants-- are making headlines. The treatment of infertility is a multi-billion dollar business in the United States, affecting an estimated 15% of couples trying to have a baby. Many professional organizations, journals, as well as consumer organizations, support groups and magazines deal with the topic, yet most people don't understand what couples who have infertility experience.

And even less is known about the option of having someone else have your baby. You can hire a surrogate, who donates her own egg that is fertilized by artificial insemination, or a gestational carrier, who does not contribute any genetic material but carries a transplanted embryo for a pregnancy. Surrogacy is mentioned twice in the Bible, but notoriety about cases involving disputes over the baby has left many people with the notion that surrogacy is a rare event, only recently used. Few states specifically allow surrogacy, and some outlaw it. Most states are silent on the issue, which brings up opportunity for conflict in the legal system.

What would it be like to pay someone to have your baby? The relationship between a woman who agrees to be a surrogate or gestational carrier and the biological mother and father is curious and complex. But, what if one of the women is black and the other white? This is the situation Maggie Reed and Rita Montreaux are in. Maggie is motivated by guilt—her sister died trying to have the baby that she asked Maggie to carry for her. Rita has always hated white women, and the idea that she would have one be a birth mother to the baby she couldn't have was impossible. Reluctant Miracle is the story of these two women and their families, and how they negotiate one of life's most important experiences. It explores the back-story behind the headlines about surrogate and biological mothers.

    SYNOPSIS
Maggie and Gordon Reed with their daughter Abigail are just getting settled on their farm in eastern Kansas when Maggie's sister dies. Maggie blames herself for her sister's death, and her grief is so great that she decides to jeopardize her marriage and her own child's health as she enters into an improbable relationship with Rita Montreaux and her husband John. Reluctant Miracle is the tale of these two women, one elegant and black, the other down-to-earth and white, as they clash in their search for a middle ground where they can work out their differences.

    The Rice Queen Spy
    By John F. Rooney

This novel, in order to depict realistically and naturally the hero's sexuality, does not pull any punches when it comes to the gay, erotic passages. These sensual interludes are presented as a necessary and integral part of the novel's narrative.

Philip Croft, a master spy for Her Majesty's secret service was cruelly outed and tortured for his homosexuality. He was a rice queen-partial only to Asian men, a gentle man who was betrayed by some-not for being gay, but for being too decent and naïve. This novel traces Philip's life and his loves, and is a triumphant testimony to a gay man's passage to old age.

He kept his dignity and lived a full life while briefly thumbing his nose at his former superiors by opening a gay sauna in London. This book breathes life into a gay man who served his country through deception, and though his country punished him for his personal deception, he became the victor rather than the victim.

      The Room with Closets
    Tales of a Life Divided
    By Pablo Iannone

Based on the author's experiences of traveling between two unique cultures on different continents, and of living under both democratic and totalitarian regimes, The Room with Closets is a fascinating and innovative volume of 13 short stories. These tales, all tied together by common threads, travel the literary landscape from grim political reality to joyous flights of fantasy and humor.

Join José Conti, his extended family, and his friends to obtain a deeper understanding of life, love, and human nature. There is Margarita, and the comical reminders of death that greet her on the first morning of her honeymoon; the Spanish shepherd, Ramón Reyes, who changes identities in order to sail to the New World; and three Argentines struggling to obtain passports from their fascist government.

There is the room with closets, and its locked door that mysteriously opens by itself; the youth Batata, who hijacks a homemade "moto-copter," seeing the "Virgin of Carmen" during his flight; and Marcos Bardán, a student of quantum physics and member of the underground, who discovers how to cheat death (but not life).

Don't miss these 13 stories from an essential Latin American writer.

    Salome , Under The Hill
    By Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley

This is two books in one. Salome (Oscar Wilde -1892) is an evocation of biblical horror in which blasphemies abound; more than this, its atmosphere seethes with a dangerous erotic charge from the very outset. Under The Hill (Aubrey Beardsley) , a short work commenced in 1894 but left unfinished at the time of Beardsley's premature demise, nonetheless archives the quintessence of Decadence, an evocation of a synaesthetic pleasure dome the equal of Huysmans' A Rebours.

    The Storks of La Caridad
    By Florence B. Weinberg

Father Ygnacio Pfefferkorn, a missionary stationed in northwestern Mexico, is expelled with all Jesuits in 1767. After ten years of prison, eight in Spain, he is incarcerated in La Caridad Monastery and befriended by Bother Eugenio, scribe, Father Plácido, choirmaster, and Father Leopoldo, instructor of boys.

La Caridad is locked in conflict with the bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo to determine jurisdiction over Robledillo, a rich parish. Two murders are committed and an ancient charter, granting the monastery perpetual jurisdiction over neighboring lands and villages, is stolen. The abbot recruits Ygnacio to solve the murders and recover the charter.

Ygnacio suspects Leopoldo, whose sister Clara is attracted to Ygnacio, although he resists his own attraction. He surprises Leopoldo in the act of trading the charter to the bishop for personal gain. Leopoldo flees to the cathedral tower, where Ygnacio corners him, only to find him innocent. The real murderer, the fanatical Fr. Plácido, threatens to throw Ygnacio off the tower, but is thwarted by Clara's timely intervention. Instead, it is Plácido who falls to his death.

    Strange Things
    By Dustin Warburton

Dustin Warburton’s writing reminds me of Robert Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter: He’s a two-fisted preacherman with love in his right hand, hate in his left. And what he is preaching in these pages is what he loves and what he hates, which is what writing horror fiction is all about. These stark, surrealfever-dreams confront the innocent and the ordinary with violence, loss, and enigmatic visions from beyond. Strange things, indeed . . .

    Tahoe Avalanche
    By Todd Borg

6th in the Owen McKenna Tahoe Mystery series by Ben Franklin Award-winner Todd Borg, TAHOE AVALANCHE is a story of greed and murder on the mountains of Tahoe.
When a monster avalanche crashes down at Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, a young man named March Carrera is swept off the mountain highway. March's uncle, Bill Esteban, a wealthy Houston businessman with a house in Tahoe, has a hunch that March's disappearance isn't an accident. Esteban contacts Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna and asks him to investigate.
Although McKenna's Great Dane Spot has some search training, McKenna decides to bring in a professional Search-And-Rescue dog that specializes in avalanches. When the dog searches the slide area, he alerts on a scent and digs up a great deal more than McKenna expected.
As McKenna is pulled into a harrowing investigation, another avalanche on the other side of Tahoe claims another victim. While McKenna struggles to find a connection between the victims, the murderer reveals his presence by warning McKenna off the case.
McKenna and his girlfriend, a forensic entomologist named Street Casey, are called to the morgue in Sacramento to examine an insect found in the lungs of one of the victims. Casey identifies it as a Boat-backed Ground beetle, a ferocious predatory insect that eats snails. Casey further connects the beetle to the soil of the Sierra foothills.
The killer follows his warning with a bomb that almost kills McKenna's dog Spot. Despite the bomb, McKenna continues to pursue the case. He follows a lead that takes him to San Francisco's seedy Tenderloin District, where an art-collecting Chinese mobster trades in stolen detonators that can be used to set off the type of explosives that ski patrollers use for avalanche-control. McKenna connects the mobster to a dead rich girl from San Francisco s exclusive Presidio neighborhood, and then ties the girl to a foothill vineyard with the kind of soil that provides home for the predacious beetles. He believes this new information identifies the killer.
Detective McKenna races back to the mountains, but arrives too late, for the suspect turns up dead, buried under another slide. When returning home, McKenna is bombed once again, this time sustaining a serious wound.
Faced with losing his life or the life of his dog, McKenna contemplates quitting the case. But he presses on and learns of a striking event that happened 140 years ago, an event that all of the avalanche victims also knew about.
This knowledge doesn't identify the killer, but it does indicate that there is one last person to die. McKenna realizes that the last intended victim is up on the shoulder of Tahoe's highest mountain. McKenna rushes to organize a rescue party. A violent storm is approaching, the last victim is with the killer, and there is one more avalanche coming to bury the secret forever.

    Take China
The Last of the China Marines
    By Harold Stephens

The occupation of China by US Marines both before World War II and after the war are part of our forgotten history. What little that has been written about the China Marines we find only as casual references in memoirs of retired generals and diplomats. Never have we heard the story as seen through the eyes of a young, unlettered Marine private who served in China after the war. "We were not loading ships to go home;" he wrote. His division was stationed on Guam after the battle of Okinawa, waiting to be sent home.. "We were loading ships to go to China to repatriate the Japanese forces. That was the reason they gave, but there were other factors at hand which they didn't tell us. These we would find out for ourselves much later. All we knew now was that we were going to a foreign land we had knew existed, nor did we know exactly why we were going. We made no decisions, and controlled no destinies, not even our own. We were told to pack our gear, and to load the ships. That was all we knew.."

Tales of Real and Dream Worlds

    By Bart Stewart

The surreal, the unreal, and the all-too-real intertwine in Tales of Real and Dream Worlds. Scenarios range from a family's entanglement in the 1938 War of the Worlds radio hoax to an otherworldly day in the life of a honey bee. From the carnivorous menace of The Statuary Cats to the poignant fate of the Brickworker, the emphasis here is on imagination of concept and skill of execution. Then we have The Jingle, a commercial ditty you will not be able to put out of your head. Ever. This is fiction that stimulates the mind. There are some dark passages, but only rare moments of violent imagery

    Tales of the China Marines
    By Edward Spasek

Tales of the China Marines is a book of historical fiction covering a period in China before World War II.  It was a fascinating time not only for civilians, but also for the U.S. Marines, Army and Navy personnel who were stationed in Peking, Tientsin, and Shanghai to protect American civilians and U.S. government property.  In addition, the U.S. Navy patrolled the Yangtze River to help and protect the many missionaries in that area.  Also protecting their own civilians were world powers like Great Britain, France, Italy, and others.  They established their own embassies and enclaves, independent of Chinese laws, to conduct their lucrative businesses.  Into this maelstrom of humanity and intrigue were thrust Darcy and Joe, U.S. Marines who had duties in Guam, Peking, and Shanghai.  They lived in a world often referred to as the "Mysterious Orient."

Those Who Dream By Day (Hardcover)
    By Linda and Gary Cargill

On Saturday, May 1, 1915, Dora shivers on the Cunard dock in New York. The Germans have printed a warning in the newspaper trying to scare Americans away from the Lusitania. Her parents and the other first-class passengers scoff at such uncivilized scare tactics. But that very night at dinner the waiter delivers her a note under glass. A stranger signed “Doom” orders her to come to the first-class lounge at midnight.

The man pulls a gun on her. She barely escapes with her life. The next day she bumps into a fellow passenger who was assaulted for catching the saboteur in the engine room playing with an incendiary bomb. The Lusitania sinks on May 7 after a mysterious second explosion.

Even in the English countryside at Ware House, Dora cannot escape the killer. He trashes her room as he trashed her cabin on the ship. Her fiancé disappears on a secret mission to the Arabian Desert. He is followed by assassins as she is being hunted down back home in Pittsburgh. As a friend comments to her, “It’s a World War, isn’t it?”

Dora must sift through clues – everything from an antique humidor, to a girl behind veils hiding in a house in London who conceals valuables in her bookcase, to cryptic Hittite script on the bottom of a box, to the elusive smile of a blond-haired, blue-eyed colonel wearing an Arab keffiyeh. Everything conspires to drive Dora to that fateful meeting in Paris in the spring of 1919 during the Peace Conference that makes her understand what four years of hard fighting has been about.

    Tick. . .Tick. . .Tick. . .
    By Roberta Crawford, Vida Publishing

Roberta Crawford is best-known for her crusading work to educate the public and the medical community about Iron Overload Disease, but she's also an extremely talented mystery writer. In this book, she combines those two passions. The plot begins, not surprisingly, with a tabloid reporter on the trail of a major killer disease ticking away unnoticed in a million Americans. It twists and turns, in grand mystery fashion, to a crystal-eyed innocent, M'Lura, being held against her will in a penthouse high above pleasure-struck South Florida. Her captors smuggle drugs, and they need M'Lura to star in their projected Disney-like fantasy sex ring. Meanwhile, the disease keeps ticking . . . ticking . . . ticking.
If you're a mystery fan, don't shy away from this one just because it contains important information for the real world. As best-selling novelist Clive Cussler commented, it's "a spellbinding and moving mystery based on mankind's least known disease. Intrigue and treachery on a grand scale. A read you won't forget. It may even save your life."
At only $16.95, this well-produced hardcover book is an excellent value.

The police have arrested one of their own detectives for murder. While on suspension for excessive force complaints in the African American community, he was taken into custody standing over the body of a black man he had been seen arguing with, and the recently fired gun in his holster has been determined to be the murder weapon.

The defendant's only hope is a 12 year old girl, whose computer skills and logic might save his life, if she can solve the mystery of who framed him, before the trial ends.

If you like solving mysteries and enjoy courtroom drama, then the Peter Sharp Legal Mystery Series is for you. This series was created by former trial attorney and saloon piano player Gene Grossman, who has been likened to a cross between John Grishan and Donald Westlake, having an ability to create legal mysteries that will teach you something about the law and while providing some humorous relief.

    Wearing the Spider
    By Susan Schaab

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. It occurs in some form every 79 seconds. And nefarious minds are dedicated to the discovery of new methods for its commission. The same technological advances that make communication easy and instant have torn our identities from us and turned them into "objects" that can be stolen and misused.

What if a male law firm partner hijacked the identity of a female associate? What if he used email impersonation and electronic forgery to set her up as the mastermind of an illegal scheme? And what if she was ultimately framed for murder as a result of his actions?

Wearing the Spider, a debut legal thriller by Susan Schaab, explores these possibilities.

Why is Crater Lake So Blue?

    By Michael LaLumiere

Thousands of years ago, the volcanic peak of Mount Mazama erupted and fell back into itself, creating a giant crater that slowly filled with rain and melting snow to become one of the deepest, bluest lakes in the world. In the summer of 1975, Sam Hunter thinks he has won the lottery when he lands a high-paying job as a seasonal maintenance worker at beautiful Crater Lake National Park. The work won’t be glamorous, so he plans to hunker down, make next year’s college tuition and maybe read a few good books in his spare time. But when he reports for his first day of work in the middle of a June blizzard and finds the cabin he’ll live in under a snowbank, Sam is pretty sure it won’t be the uneventful summer he planned. By midsummer, greed, selfishness and an antiquated sewer system combine forces to shut down Crater Lake – the first time a U. S. National Park has ever closed. Amidst finger-pointing, conspiracy theories and shared, tragic secrets, Sam sees what people value the most, and what they will do to protect it. Finally, Sam must decide whether or not to help a friend, even if it means leaving his safe role as observer and putting his life in danger. In this novel set against the backdrop of actual events, Sam shares his funny, poignant, and often unbelievable tale of “how he spent his summer” with a keen, self-deprecating wit and straight-as-an-arrow insight into what makes people – and a National Park -- tick.Based on a true story.
