A Portrait of Leadership, A Fighter for Health
The Honorable Paul Grant Rogers

By Roger J. Bulger, M.D. & Shirley Sirota Rosenberg

His name is The Honorable Paul Grant Rogers, and he is the man who got the Clean Air Act through the House, salvaged the "s" in the National Institutes of Health, fast-forwarded the War on Cancer, and then expanded the schools, workforce, clinics, and hospitals to support it all.

It is also because of Paul Rogers that consumer-information inserts arrive with our prescriptions, we understand that the state of the environment is firmly connected to our state of health, and manufacturers have voluntarily taken ozone-damaging CFCs out of cooling systems and hair sprays.

All this and more mark the story of the legislative journey of the 12-term congressman from Florida. When he retired in 1979, the man who came to Washington as a conservative Democrat two dozen years earlier had passed more than 50 laws recognizing the critical role of government in improving the health of our people.

Engaged in the practice of health law since leaving Congress, Private Citizen Rogers continues to advocate for the best possible health for all, including those with little or no access to good healthcare.

Studded with personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes snapshots of political jousting both in Congress and on the pro bono scene, A Portrait of Leadership, A Fighter for Health reads at times like the congressional version of the West Wing. It also makes us privy to the way a great leader goes about his work, and a leadership approach that many others, especially managers of larger organizations, will find useful in their work.

A Song For The World
The Amazing Story of The Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen: Musical Diplomats

By Frank McGee

Few men, and even fewer entertainers, have impacted world events like the Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen. They played to cheering audiences across the globe, from intimate gatherings in the huts of remote villages to rock-star scale crowds at concert halls in great metropolises. They thrilled 90 million television viewers with their groundbreaking Up with People halftime spectacular at Super Bowl X.

They met and performed for presidents, kings and prime ministers as well as everyday people in 60 countries on 6 continents. Their songs entertained, and challenged listeners to think, to see, to stand and make things better. Or sometimes, their music simply served to put things into perspective and help people laugh.

They made it look easy to write songs on the road, rehearse them on the fly, and sing them in dialects and languages they had barely heard before. They never complained, though it took sacrifice, determination, and, most of all, courage. They literally walked away from their childhoods, comfort, careers and loved ones. They put it all on the line for something they believed.

What they believed was that they could change the world. A Song for the World is the inside story, an up close and personal view of how they made things happen. It takes you around the planet and through half a century of historic, world shaping events that felt their influence.

Through it all, the Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen relentlessly pursued the purpose of humanity. Their dedication and dreams touched the heart of a planet, set it beating to the rhythm of their music, and started its people marching to a greater vision of possibility. Such is the power of their music.

At Home in Asia
Expatriates in Southeast Asia and Their Stories
By Harold Stephens

At Home in Asia comes from the pen of Harold Stephens who has spent most of his adult years in Asia where he has become one of that region's best-known writer/adventurers.  He has authored more than a dozen books (travel, adventure, exploration, biographies) and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles on his Asia experience.  From mountain climbing to jungle trekking, from sailing to diving, few have experienced Asia and its people with the richness of Harold Stephens.  He presently divides his time between Miranda, northern California, and Bangkok, Thailand, where he writes a weekly travel column for the Bangkok Post and is Travel Correspondent for Thai Airways International.

In this, his latest book, Stephens introduces the reader to some of the fascinating expatriate men and women he has come to know over the years.  The biographical sketches of action photographers, artists, philosophers, entrepreneurs, sailors, environmentalists and others, are as varied and alluring as Southeast Asia itself.  The book can also serve as a how-to book for those who dream about living abroad.

By Ralph Conte

A History of the 416th Bombardment Group (L) flying A-20 and A-26 Twin Engine Bombers in the European Theater of Operations. The formation of the group and every one of the 285 combat missions flown is detailed, listing the lead pilots and bombardier-navigators of the formations. Commendations from Ground Forces Commanders are included, thanking the group for their outstanding bombing techniques in eliminating enemy concentrations of troops and equipment, hindering the advancing allied forces after D-Day. The Group earned the Distinguished Unit Commendation for destroying the last remaining bridge over the Seine River, trapping some 200,000 enemy troops in the Falaise Gap who were trying to return to Germany, being pushed by Allied Forces from the Normandy Beaches. We flew two combat missions on D-Day supporting beachhead warriors. The 416th were the first group of the 9th Air Force to use A-20 and A-26 bombers in Europe.

Battle of The Java Sea
By Holland Films

"THE BATTLE OF THE JAVA SEA"
This movie was produced by Oduessea Films of Holland in 1996. Already it is an international award winner. The USS Houston (above) was in this battle and the Houston's experience is described in "Death Becomes The Ghost". However, the Dutch, the British, the Australians and several other ships of the American Navy were involved in this great battle on 27 February, 1942. The Japanese, being of single purpose and honed to a fine edged fighting fleet, were the unquestioned victor. The Allies lost almost their entire fleet. A few four stack destroyers miraculously got away before the battle ended, having been ordered out of the fray when their armament and fuel was exhausted. This movie does a masterful job of pulling eyewitness accounts from all of the Navies that were involved, including the Japanese. It is a resource that makes an ideal companion to the Grade-A Production, "Death Becomes The Ghost". A special offer discounts the price when both titles are ordered.

NOTE:
This film makes extensive use of interviews with survivors of the battles. This was a WORLD war, so there are interviews with non-English speaking veterans. Sub-titles assist in these interviews. Of course for those of us who speak English, the British, Australian and American sailors do not require subtitles. Oddly, some people have viewed the first minute of the film, and upon hearing the Dutch veteran speak his native tongue, have returned the tape for a full refund.

Boldt Castle: In Search of the Lost Story
By Paul Malo

About the Book...

Each summer some quarter-million people visit Boldt Castle and learn its tragic love story. Louise Boldt, forty-one years old and mother of two, died just as her husband was attaining great wealth and fame. In January of 1904 a telegram from George Boldt stopped work on their dream house. Despite millions of dollars spent, he abandoned the project forever.

Contrary to this official version, generations of local folk have told "true stories" about what really happened. This largest book to study the Boldts and their fantastic building projects presents startling revelations that alter all versions of the tragedy.

The author's "Search of the Lost Story" is recalled as a series of conversations about the Boldts and their projects. The informal dialogue presents decades of research and reports interview with family and others who have shared information, experiences, and personal impressions.

Boldt Castle and the other buildings of the Boldt estate are evaluated as historic architecture of national and international importance. Policy of current restoration is debated. A continuing campaign of renovation has cost nearly fifteen-million dollars already, making Boldt Castle one of America's premier historic landmarks.

The Butterfield Messenger
By Richard S. Calhoun

Imagine yourself sitting next to the driver on a stagecoach for twenty-four hours. Along with the long ride, it might be blazing hot, a driving rainstorm, a blinding snowstorm, or freezing cold. That's the life of the Butterfield Overland Mail messenger in 1858.
There were hostile Apaches and highway men, broken axles, sand storms, rushing rivers that were dangerous to ford, wild mules that had to be chased down and hitched, steep rocky mountain roads where passengers had to get out and walk in all kinds of weather and push the stage coach up to the top of the pass, and much of the stage station food served was spoiled and wormy. This was the life of the Butterfield messenger.
Now you can take a step back in time, back 150 years, and witness life as it was in 1858. The author presents history, adventures, characters, and events of life on the Butterfield route from Missouri to California and presents an exciting 232-page easy to read book for almost any age.

Chalmette
The Battle for New Orleans and How the British Nearly Stole the Louisiana Territory

By Charles Patton

Now you will understand WHY the British attacked us at the Battle of New Orleans. This book shows how the United States nearly lost the Louisiana Territory at the end of the War of 1812. After twenty-one years of tremendous struggle against France, England had finally conquered Napoleon and France in the summer of 1814. England was now a highly efficient war machine, a superpower. They could now turn their full attention on that irritating loose association of states across the Atlantic.

Follow Jackson's militia as they maneuver a far superior British Army into a position where Jackson's men had a better than even chance of winning. They had to subdue the British allies (the Creeks) and they had to stop any Spanish help at Pensacola and Mobile.

It was the bleakest point in United States history. British Canada ruled the north and now the English were going to take New Orleans, control of the Mississippi River and the Louisiana Territory. With the United States almost completely boxed in, see how they pulled off a victory that electrified the United States and stunned Europe.

Complete indexing, bibliography, and pictures make Chalmette valuable for use by schools and historians.

The Chosen Island
Jews in Cuba

By Martiza Corrales

This book tells the story of refuge, integration and regeneration. Through interviews and reliance on archival material, it recounts the lives of thirty six Jewish men and women, who emigrated to or were born in Cuba in the last century, who became part of the Cuban social fabric and whose presence in Cuba after 1959 kept the spirit of Judaism alive. They lived their Jewishness in very different ways, but all---in one way or another---lived it and shared its traditions.

The book is divided into three sets of interviews that frame the most significant temporal, geographic and ideological aspects that characterize this immigration. Their stories reveal the reasons for their displacement from their countries of origin and explain how Cuba became a destiny for Jewish immigrants fleeing economic hardship and persecution in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. They illustrate the incorporation of these immigrants into the collective identity of Cuban society, their strategies of adaptation and the organizational structures they created in the process of their social, economic and cultural integration. They also reflect the pull of the two main ideological tendencies (Zionism and Communism), coexisting in counterpoint, that shaped the distinct character of this community.

Come and See
A Photojournalist's Journey into the World of Mother Teresa

By Linda Schaefer

Unlike most books of photographs about Mother Teresa, Come and See: A Photojournalist's Journey into the World of Mother Teresa is very unique. It combines the text of a journal handwritten by photojournalist Linda Schaefer as well as some 155 full color photographs taken as she lived and worked with the Missionaries of Charities and the international team of volunteers in various facilities run by Mother Teresa throughout India.

Schaefer had decided many years ago that she wanted to shoot a pictorial on Mother Teresa and her work. Finally in 1995 she had a brief encounter with the living saint during a visit to Atlanta to open an AIDS hospice. This event renewed her passion to photograph the nun in her natural surroundings and share a different look at Mother Teresa with the world. This was not an easy task. Mother Teresa was opposed to "another book" about her. As she put it, "too many people are making money and none of it gets to the poor who really need it." After accepting a challenge from Mother Teresa to put her cameras down and go to work in the orphanages and houses of the dying, Schaefer finally received the answer to her prayers. Mother Teresa penned a note to Linda granting her complete and unfettered access to her facilities, the Missionaries of Charity, the international team of volunteers, and thousands of poor and sick.

The result is a beautiful 160-page coffee table-size book that was created around the dictates of Mother Teresa. As she put it, she wanted the people who picked up this book to see "her world" -- the environment in which she lived and shared her love. She wanted viewers to actually "see, smell and hear" the real world in which she lived and worked.. She didn't want a book packed full of individual photos of herself, and so Schaefer's work portrays all of the component parts that made up the world of Mother Teresa. This is the focus of Come and See.

What makes this book so unique is that Linda Schaefer became "the last professional photographer granted full access to Mother Teresa and her facilities and staff prior to her illness and death." The photographs Schaefer took are now historic documentation -- the final inside look -- of the amazing world of the woman Time magazine called "the woman of the century."

As a 5 year-old child, Janice could have never known what mayhem and destruction her life would lead her to. Riddled by tragedy and death, she would find herself back in the arms of the man who had taken her virginity at the age of five. A man whose life had been filled with molestation, drugs, murder, and deceit. In her heart, Janice always believed the nightly visits paid to her by her cousin- were out of love an not the horrible sickness she would later come to discover.
This book is a collection of thoughts and memories trapped in the author's mind. While spirituality and survival are the overarching theme, the underlining story is about societal failure, and its effect on the youth, left to live a life filled with sex, crime and betrayal.

Death Becomes The Ghost
By Vic Campbell

"Death Becomes The Ghost"
video VHS 100 minutes 2 parts on one tape
PART I.. "The Glory"
For three months into the Pacific War, the American Asiatic Fleet fought with Allied Navies to hold the Japanese expansion to the South. In the climactic Battle of The Java Sea, the Allies (Dutch, British, Australian and American) sacrificed their remaining battle fleets in desperation. HMAS Perth and USS Houston survived this battle only to be lost in a suicidal attack on a fresh Japanese Fleet in Sunda Strait two days later. It was a glorious but horrific death for two great ships and the end of the US Asiatic Fleet.

The story takes the USS Houston from its commissioning the start of WWII in the Pacific and through the difficult first 4 months of the Pacific War in which the Asiatic Fleet and Allied Fleets were sacrificed to slow the Japanese Advance. The story ends with only the HMAS Perth and USS Houston left. They face the might of the Japanese Navy alone and are torn to pieces. The sinking of the USS Houston ended the existence of the Asiatic Fleet.

Part II... "The Shame"
The carnage of battle ended and the carnage of inhuman slavery and deprivation began for those who were fortunate enough to survive and become guests of the Japanese Army. In one of the most shameful episodes of the World War, the survivors of the Houston, the Perth and other Allied commands that fell into the hands of the Japanese, became slave labor. The deprivation, beatings, murder, disease and exhaustive slavery took 22,000 American lives (some estimate 200,000 natives lives). It is a SHAMEFUL episode that must be told.

The few who survived the ferocious Battle of Sunda Strait are captured. Volume II follows the hellish existence of these sailors and others who joined them (the 131st Field Artillery, Texas National Guard, "The Lost Battalion" for instance). The volume ends with the repatriation of the survivors and their return home to a victorious nation, their part in the victory having been long forgotten as the war continued nearly four years after their own ship was lost.

The Enoch Train Pioneers
The Trek of the First Two Handcart Companies

By Robert O. Day

Just imagine hundreds of people leaving their homes. Liverpool, England becomes the starting place for those routed to the Americas to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their trek took them by boat, bus, train and finally by handcart to the Great Salt Lake Valley. This book recounts the trials and triumphs of their journey based on journals and other historical documents and then gently weaves Robert's storytelling genius into short snippets of how these people might have felt during some of their adventures. This history also provides complete records of the names of every soul who made the journey along with which handcart companies they followed. A must for genealogists or those interested in early Mormon history.

Midwest Book Review says, "Highly recommended for school and community library collections, the text reads smoothly from first page to last as the story of this memorable bit of American history unfolds.  Exhaustive appendices round out this fascinating narrative and historical references."

Fleet Walker's Divided Heart
the life of baseball's first black major leaguer

By David Zang, Narrator Andrew L. Barnes

Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first black American to play baseball in a major league. But Walker is more than a footnote: his life demonstrates both the devastation of racism and the role of baseball as a symbol of the nation. Walker achieved college baseball stardom while he was a student at Oberlin College in the 1880s. As Walker's athletic ability earned success on the playing field, racial attitudes were hardening and segregation was becoming the pattern of American society, both on the field and off. Teammates as well as opponents harassed him; Cap Anson, the Chicago White Stockings star, is credited with driving Walker and the few other blacks in the major leagues out of the game but could not have done so alone. Walker's life was defined as much by the fact that he was part white as it was by his black heritage. His attempts to reconcile his Anglo and African aspects left him in glorious disarray. Although acquitted of a murder on the grounds of self-defense, he eventually served time in prison on a federal mail robbery conviction. A gifted athlete, an inventor, a civil rights activist, an author, and an entrepreneur, Walker lived precariously along the fault lines of America's racial dilemma. He died in 1924 after a life of thwarted ambition and talent, frustrated by both the American dream and the national pastime.

Frederick Douglass
Narrative of an American Slave

By Frederick Douglass, narrated by Andrew L. Barnes

Frederick Douglass, prominent abolitionist, civil rights activist and reform journalist, was raised in the malicious system of slavery. Frederick was brought to the nearby wheat plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. Two years later he was moved to Baltimore to labor in the household of Hugh and Sophia Auld, where he remained for the next seven years. Eventually, Frederick secretly learned to read and write, despite the laws against slave literacy, studied discarded newspapers, and became knowledgeable about the national debate over slavery. After an unsuccessful attempt to buy his freedom, Frederick escaped from slavery in September 1838. Soon after arriving in New Bedford, Frederick Douglass remarks at an August 1841 convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society on Nantucket Island brought him to the attention of Garrison, a leading white abolitionist. As he matured as an antislavery lecturer, his keen mind even led some to question whether he had ever been a slave. To counter doubts about his life experience as a slave, Douglass wrote an autobiography providing full details of his life, in the winter of 1844- 1845. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave, is an emotional journey into the atrocious system of slavery, and the inspirational triumph against insurmountable odds. Legacy Audio is proud to present this audio book production of "Frederick Douglass: Narrative of an American Slave".

Healing The Nation
An In-Depth Study of African-Americans
By Dorothy Rutledge Swygert

The heart of America has grown cold. Early in its history, America was a nation of families and neighbors building community-homes that were safe havens, churches that provided a moral compass, schools that followed the Golden Rule, and communities that embraced their children. Today, however, lust and greed have crept into the fabric of the nation, tearing it from it's traditional moral foundation in those four basic institutions-home, church, school, and community.

Home Kids
The Story of St. Agatha Home for Children
By Nancy Canfield

"We're going to take you kids," he pointed at each of us sitting on the couch and said our names in a sing-song voice, "Jackie...Tommy...Helen...David...and Nancy," pausing between each name as if to prove he knew them, "to see a school tomorrow, a boarding school, see how you like it." He said this in a voice that implied it was temporary, like we'd have a choice about attending.

With those words, the Canfield siblings began a journey that profoundly shaped their formative years. "Home Kids" is Nancy Canfield's courageous retelling of her family's dramatic story and the inspirational story of St. Agatha Home for Children.

From the immigrant orphans of the 19th century to the crack babies of the late 20th, orphanages like St. Agatha Home for Children provided physical and emotional shelter for thousands of destitute children and escorted them into the mainstream of American Society. Home Kids is the powerful and heartfelt story of St. Agatha Home as told through archival records, newspaper accounts, and compelling first-hand interviews with former residents who found nurture and hope at St. Agatha Home for Children.

In Destiny's Hands
Survival Against the Odds
By Spiros Sideris

I held my daughter's lifeless body in my arms for two agonizing days.

I buried her with my own two hands and a few days later witnessed the most incredible miracle. God brought her back as He did his son.

This is one of the many miracles I have experienced in my life. You will learn why, in 1979, I kidnapped my 24 month old daughter from her uncaring and wanton mother in Greece. We came to this country illegally and became fugitives chased by the FBI in a place where we did not speak the language. We were surrounded by strangers, mostly mean and hypocritical, and only a few genuinely good. We lived in cemeteries, under bridges and ate out of trash cans to survive.

I am not a writer; I have been a construction worker for 25 years in the United States. Back in my country I was a movie mechanic, but because fate had written our destiny we had to follow it to the end. My daughter and I have lived what could be called a miraculous life. We fought life and death together. I invite you to read my story and share my feelings during these astonishing events--the pain and the joy, the questioning of my faith, and my ultimate affirmation of God's presence and love in our live

In the Lord's Eyes
Mama's Pearls
By Charlotte Russell Johnson

Mama s Pearls is the sixth book in author Charlotte Johnson s series of motivational text. This book is a very poignant chronicle of the faith, wit, and the down home charm of Ms. Johnson s mother, Evelyn Russell. Loyal fans of Ms. Johnson have already developed a feeling of closeness to her mother, affectionately called Mother Russell. Throughout Ms. Johnson s books, her mother serves as a spiritual mentor teaching her about love and redemption through her selfless love. Mother Russell loves, when it seems that her daughter is beyond change and is unwilling to embrace her mother s instructions. Mother Russell is a paradox. She is both a spiritually mature student of the Bible, while maintaining her down home folksy charm, sharp tongue, and nostalgic stories of her youth that serve to entertain the reader. These stories offer inspiration, encouragement, hope, and motivation. More importantly, these oral traditions serve as method of handing down the wisdom of times past. A mother s love can be essential to a child s emotional well-being and character development. Charlotte Johnson shares her mother with the world to offer hope and encouragement in troubled times. This book is excellent for those in need of hope, seeking a miracle, searching for a way to maintain their faith, or looking for an uplifting and humorous book. Mother Russell grew up in a family where oral storytelling was a method of passing family wisdom and traditions to the younger generations. She passed these stories onto her children. These stories are a combination of Mother Russell s life experiences and oral traditions passed from her father. My heart was touched when Ms. Johnson wrote earlier in her series, Mama why do you still care? Mama s Pearl answers why a mother still cares when all hope is gone and the world has given up on her child. As Ms. Johnson explores her family s past in order to bring light and perspective to the present, Mama s Pearls is reminiscent of Alex Haley s Roots.

Just Call Me Moose!
Growing Up Italian in America
By Karl R. Bossi

From the prattle on the cobblestone streets of Dorchester, a working class neighborhood of Boston, to the harrowing jungles of Vietnam, an era comes alive in the newly published memoir "Just Call Me Moose! Growing Up Italian in America".

The 256-page book illustrated with 17 vintage photos not only provides a visceral look at an important time in history. The book also explores author Karl Bossi's lifelong confrontation with his father's suicide which occurred just days before his senior prom.  In deference to this, a portion of the book revenues will be given to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention (www.afsp.org) in New York City.

Bossi's memoir, sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet, is a vivid and often humorous portrait of what it was like to grow up in a comfortable middle-class family with poles-apart Italian-speaking parents. Only later does he realize that "Mum" had never found Pop's channel, the one he transmitted on, but not until he understands that "Mum" never could tune into her last son any better.

Ron Della Chiesa, an icon of WGBH Boston public radio, noted that "Just Call Me Moose! Growing Up Italian in America" is "a powerful and poignant journey that takes the reader from the streets of Boston in the 'fifties to the jungles of Vietnam."  He added, "This is a nostalgic tale, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad. I can relate to his search for the cause of his father's untimely and tragic death. ...Fascinating and thought provoking.  ...I laughed and cried, and you will too!"

Karl R. Bossi, a native of Boston, graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in mathematics and left home for the United States Air Force. Karl retired as a lieutenant colonel after serving in Europe and the Far East. He led a bomb disposal team in Vietnam and later became an aerospace logistic engineer. He holds graduate degrees in counseling and guidance and procurement management and is a published writer.

Look What Happened While You Were Sleeping
By A friend of Medjugorje

After the French and Indian War (1763), the King of England disallowed an act made by the Colony of Virginia's assembly. In a lawsuit, a young lawyer by the name of Patrick Henry declared that the king was a tyrant and that by the act of disallowance, the king forfeited his right to have the colonists remain obedient to him.

If the beginning steps that led to the formation of our nation started from such actions, which by comparison to our situation today, was much less grievous, how much more justified would citizens be in taking similar actions in our present situation? Patrick Henry's statement called for disallowing the legitimacy of the king to govern over them. What legitimacy, therefore, should we consider our government today to have that allows the formation of laws, which disallows natural law? Laws that take from citizens their private property, permit abortion and accept unnatural lifestyles. Laws against natural law are laws without legitimacy. We must ask the question, has the present system of electing and governing betrayed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? If it has, then are we not being led to the same conclusion as Patrick Henry—that the ruling government over us has made itself illegitimate? Has the present form of government hi-jacked our legitimate Declaration and Constitutional, Republic form of government? If we answer yes, then how will we respond? Will we follow the witness of our Forefathers who recognized that the king had forfeited the right to govern and therefore, forfeited the right to have the people remain obedient to him? Has the present form of government, which is acting against our republic and the will of the people it is suppose to represent, forfeited the right to govern? At what point do the words declared in the Declaration,

"It is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and provide new guards for their future security"

play in against the present form of government?

The present form of governing is not fulfilling the dreams our Forefathers had. We are called to fulfill those dreams. The time is ripe. The time is now.

The word reflects centuries of servitude in Mexico.  The few who dared to question it authority shook the foundations of their world.  "Whither thou goest" commanded a pregnant nineteen-year-old to follow her impoverished husband as he studied medicine in Monterrey, Mexico.  Speaking no Spanish, traveling alone with their tiny daughter, Gail leapt into the unknown.

Maude (1883-1993): She Grew Up With The Country
by Mardo Williams

During her 110 years, Maude went from a 400-lb. wood-burning stove to a microwave oven, from an outdoor privy to indoor plumbing. She got the vote in 1920 and voted in the next 18 Presidential elections.

With poetry and human dramas (two murders and a suicide), written by a master journalist, the book shows the impact of the changing times on shy, unassuming Maude, her fun-loving husband Lee, and their four active children. They farmed 100-acres on the banks of Rush Creek in Logan County (Ohio).

Maude is a favorite with book discussion groups and is being used as a supplemental text (to "put a human face on history") in college American history classes.

"Maude is not only a fascinating story of an extraordinarily resilient woman but also an invaluable insight into how family life, and making a living, changed so dramatically during the 20th century. The book is of considerable value not only to general readers but also to social historians..."-Dr. Richard
Trainor, Vice-Chancellor, University of Greenwich, U.K.

"Mardo Williams brings out the extraordinary in a seemingly ordinary century's worth of experiences in his fine biography of Maude."-Leonard Lopate, New York & Co., National Public Radio

"Because he was patient with the details, the scenes, the landscape of character, [the author] came away with an engaging and fascinating work about a courageous woman whose story truly ought to be shared..."--Mike Harden, The Columbus Dispatch

"..full of delightful stories about rural America-just the kind you wished you'd jotted down after conversations with your grandmother"--Joan Dyer-Zinner, Michigan Community Newspapers

"Maude's life story is [one] of the transformation of America from a world of primitive farms to a world of electrified cities. More than a collection of stories, it is a tribute to one woman's love, patience, and courage."-Lindsay Peterson, Tampa Tribune

"Mardo Williams brings the harshness and deprivation of Ohio farm life vividly back to life as well as its simple joys. And at the center of it is Maude--dignified, supremely competent as she stood beside her husband and raised their children, and uncomplaining. These days, as politicians pay lip service to
family values, Maude is what they're all about."--Ralph Gardner, Jr., New York Observer

Mardo Williams began his writing career in 1927 as a reporter for the Kenton (Ohio) News-Republican, later writing a daily business column with byline for the Columbus Dispatch. At 88 he learned the computer and wrote this book as a tribute to his mother and other women like her at the turn of the century who did so much with so little--no electricity, no indoor plumbing, none of the
conveniences we take for granted today. He won an Ohioana Library Award in 2001 (posthumously) for his unique and outstanding lifelong literary contributions as author and journalist.

The Ministry of Wayne B. Smith
Love, Laughter and Leadership
By Rod Huron

When people learned that I was writing a book about Wayne Smith, everyone of them had a story. "Do you have the one where he....?" If everything were included, this would resemble the Manhattan phone directory, which is understandable considering that when The Herald Leader surveyed their readership asking for "The 100 Most Influential Citizens in Lexington," Wayne B. Smith ranked near the top.

Two names in particular stand out: Susan Nelson and Virginia Warner. Susan's work at the beginning and Virginia's work at t he end, proved extremely helpful. This book might never have been written without their contributions.

Joe Cooper and Fred Mitchell had the onerous task of sorting through more than 100 typed pages - almost all single spaced - of Wayne's jokes. Well, somebody had to. The finalists are in chapter 7.

Charles Lees systematized the list of Wayne's speaking dates and we wanted to include it, but it ran to 30 pages even with type too small to be readable. The list was omitted.

Wayne's oldest daughter, Judy Speakes, logged the name of every person named in this book (almost 500), and proofed the manuscript for accuracy. "I paid her handsomely," Wayne insists.

Mike McGinnis and Williamstown (Kentucky) Christian Church provided a Sunday school room where Wayne talked and I typed.

Ann Nelson, Roy and Beth Mays, Brewster McLeod, Christine Clough...so many whose names are included and many whose names are not, have participated in this project. We've all had fun.

Brad Johnson, Chanda Veno, Dana Bart, Pat Henderson and the entire team at Host Communications deserve commendation for their patience, competence and professionalism.

Where the book is good, credit Wayne. Where it has faults, blame me. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing.

The Other Winfrey
Life In The Shadow of "O"
By J. F. del Giorgio

This is a personal memoir that chronicles the tribulations and triumphs of a Winfrey: not Oprah Winfrey, but Shakeeta Winfrey. What's in a name? What's not in a name is the question. Being a relative of an international icon has its highs, lows, ups, downs. Her experiences include: crime, drugs, prostitution, poverty, incest, torment, danger and intrigue. And through these experiences, she had to find out the hard way that it's the choices we make that determine our outcome. This memoir will make you laugh and cry, and hopefully, make you reconsider your own chosen path or the path you are about to take. Shakeeta's faith in God helped her to overcome the painful past and serves as an example of what can be done when you believe nothing shall be impossible with God.

The Oldest Europeans
Who are we? Where do we come from? What made European women different?
By J. F. del Giorgio

What made Europe unique? DNA tests show that only a few hardy, female-structured families survived the coldest episode of the Ice Age. Most Europeans are their descendants. Paleolithic females decided the marriage of their brothers, inheritance went to women and men were known by the name of their mothers. Ancient European women were pretty, sexy and aggressive. They had a surprisingly high status. Power came only through them. Paleolithic rituals originated modern theater. Mother Goddess' myths started classic and renaissance art. Many modern religious traditions keep some of their fertility cult rites. The book describes their societies and the clash against the invading Indo-European tribes that suppressed women's rights and dethroned them from their control of religious rituals. The still formidable influence of those mostly ignored, ancient societies has forged the European soul and originated the American traditions of freedom. It is deeply influencing the world. Basques, Celts, Etruscans, Pelasgians parade through these pages tied by their DNA, revealing a surprising world full of werewolves, snake-priestesses, witches and sex rituals.

The Other Side!
The Life Journey of a Young Girl through Nazi Germany
By Inge Myrick

Now in its second edition, this memoir captures a young woman's coming of age in Nazi Germany. Inge's family tried to isolate itself from Hitler's destructive policies, but the young girl who presented flowers to the visiting Fuhrer in 1935 and the young woman who nursed wounded soldiers in 1943 could not escape the devastating effects of the war and Nazism. After the war, Inge resolved to escape East Germany for Western Europe and the promise of freedom. This portrait of life during wartime, seen through the eyes of an adolescent girl, speaks profoundly to the cost of conflict on all people. Phoenicians
Lebanon's Epic Heritage

By Sanford Holst

This is the most complete history of the Phoenicians assembled to date, and includes new research by leading scholars of the Mediterranean. Since the Phoenicians were involved with the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians in many of the great events of antiquity, this detailed account brings those epic events to life as never before. These shipbuilders from Lebanon became famous sea traders whose cedar was used in early Egyptian temples and placed in the Great Pyramids. Archaeology and classical sources show how they were involved with the beautiful Minoan civilization on Crete, and with the Sea Peoples who influenced the fall of the Mycenaeans and Hittites. They founded colonies as far as Spain and Morocco, and circulated the first alphabet. They competed with the rising Classical Greeks, and lost cities to Alexander the Great. Successful campaigns by Hannibal of Carthage were followed by an epic loss to newly-emerging Rome. This book has 113 sources, freshened with many maps and pictures. Author Sanford Holst is widely regarded as one of the leading experts on the Phoenician people. Antoine Khoury Harb is a highly respected professor of history and archaeology in Lebanon.

Photographer of the Early West
The Story of Arundel Hull

By Eugene A. Miller

The daring feat of building the transcontinental railroad, the exciting years of westward expansion, the look and feel of the United States and its people as the country matured from Civil War times through the Spanish American War-all are portrayed in Photographer of the Early West: The Story of Arundel Hull through more than seventy photographs taken by Hull between 1865 and 1906, his wife's diary entries, newspaper reports, and family accounts.

From traveling by covered wagon and stage coach to stringing wire for telephones, from vigilante justice and mining for gold and homesteading to electricity and municipal power plants, Hull lived it and preserved it for us through his remarkable photographs.

Spanning a time of exhilarating growth, the book describes the struggles and successes of one man, his family, and a cast of colorful characters on the western frontier in the late 1800s. Evocative illustrations make you feel as if you are there.

Pieces of Pie
Surviving Love

By Pie Dumas

Pie Dumas' new book opens to a lonely little girl sitting in a cardboard house, decorating its interior walls with the smiling faces of imaginary family members. That image seems to linger—as indelible as the colored marker young Pie draws with—all the way through to the book's final, moving paragraphs.

Flimsy as the cardboard walls are and no matter how often they must be rebuilt, redecorated and refastened with brown shipping tape, they are the youngster's only sanctuary from the horrific betrayal she is subjected to almost daily, and which she represses entirely from her awareness. Well into young adulthood, Pie similarly must build and rebuild her own fragile identity, until such time she can face her darkest nightmares and connect with her genuine self.

On one level Pieces of Pie tells a raw and candid story of Pie's inner struggle with the bewildering implications of childhood incest—and for this reason alone, it's a book for anyone who longs to reconnect with their authentic spirit. On another level, it is a richly detailed and readable travelogue and adventure story, which takes the reader:

  • from a drab inner office in Ohio where young Pie is forced by her father into years of child labor
  • to the carnival circuit, where she lugs her father's merchandise display cases
  • to seedy, brutal underworld encounters, affairs with black men, fashionable life in a swank Central Park apartment, and a private audience with the king of Thailand.

Ultimately, this is an exhilarating tale of self-discovery, of a reunion of spirit, and of a full life that only really begins as the last page is turned.

Quiet Courage
The definitive account of Flight 93 and its aftermath

By Glenn J. Kashurba, M.D.

"Dr. Kashurba, in Courage After the Crash, used first-person accounts to help us understand how a rural county in Western Pennsylvania responded to a disaster that, literally, fell out of the sky.

Now, in Quiet Courage, Dr. Kashurba brings the story up-to-date with accounts from Flight 93 families and citizens of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, committed to establishing a permanent memorial to the heroes of Flight 93. Overlying these first-hand accounts are the details of what occurred onboard UAL 93, the 9/11 plot and the ongoing investigations that are still front-page news.

As with Courage After the Crash, the author will donate his royalties to charity. The Flight 93 Memorial will receive Dr. Kashurba's royalties from Quiet Courage.

This is an American story using American voices showing American values at their best."

The River is Mine
John Powell's 1869 Exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers and The Grand Canyon

By Ardian Gill

Ardian Gill's novel tells the story of John Wesley Powell's 1869 exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers and the Grand Canyon. It is the adventure of ten men shooting rapids and painstakingly carrying and lining heavy wooden boats through cascades, cataracts and waterfalls. The action is breathtaking and invigorating, the story straight forward and clearly told. Written as a fictional expansion of the actual diary of one member of the expedition, the action is always front and center, but enriched by the interplay among the men, who include journalists, farmers, trappers, and Civil War veterans. Most intriguing, perhaps, is the narrator's changing view of the head of the expedition – the brilliant, narrow-visioned, intrepid, one-armed Major Powell. Read this novel for the adventure, for the character studies, and for the satisfaction of how ordinary men can uplift us by their determination and physical courage. "Superbly crafted, vividly told...powerfully presented and emotionally involving."

Servants of the Fish
A Portrait of Newfoundland after the Great Cod Collapse
By Myron Arms

Myron Arms' new book explores in detail an environmental, social, and economic disaster. As the last of the northern cod disappeared from the fishing banks of eastern North America during the waning years of the 20th century, more than just fish faced the threat of extinction. In communities all around the island of Newfoundland, thousands of fishermen and their families suddenly found themselves confronted by a similar threat

Servants of the Fish is the story of these people, who are at once the perpetrators and the victims of this event. As he did in his best-selling Riddle of the Ice, Arms employs the drama of the voyage to bring readers face to face with the people and the geography of the tale he tells. It is the tale of a particular time and place. Yet it is also an allegory of sorts—about predators and prey, about greed and denial, and about our collective ability as human beings to destroy natural systems once thought to be infinite.

Summer of the Dragon

By Don Goodman

Summer of the Dragon is as collection of essays that afford the reader entry into the mind of a naturalist. This is a realm where a toad is valuable enough to purloin as a childhood treasure; where the recipient of an impending snake bite does not yank back his hand but rather holds it perfectly still to avoid ripping out some of the serpent's delicate teeth and potentially inflicting an oral infection. It describes the extremes to which zoologists will go to procure the perfect museum specimen, including leaping from the driver's seat of a moving vehicle and disappearing into the woods in pursuit of a squirrel and then using a toothbrush to make sure every hair is in place on the final stuffed specimen. The title---Summer of the Dragon---derives from the book's seminal chapter of the same name that describes an alligator attack that cost Goodman his right arm. The mostly humorous essays describe a lifetime of interactions with animals and plants.

The trials and misadventures of student days at the University of Florida---including meddling landladies and battles with cows and chickens for dominion over the backyard garden are described in tales that are often "laugh out loud" funny. Also in the mix are accounts of some of Florida's most colorful eccentrics, like the pothead who made a bid for the governorship of Florida---or thought he did---and The Wicked Witch of West Gainesville. The book's concluding chapters lament the ongoing collapse of the earth's ecological systems and plead for a long overdue change in course to insure that our children don't inherit a world in ruins. They detail the necessity of amending long and dearly held social and religious values to achieve such a goal and the consequences of failure.

Goodman is an accomplished writer whose style has been compared with that of his mentor, naturalist Dr. Archie Carr, Jr. He has been featured on National Geographic Society television specials and in Esquire magazine, among others, and his book was most recently---and glowingly---reviewed by columnist Jeffrey Klinkenberg in the August 3 St. Petersburg Times.

Starting at Sea Level: A Memoir
By Terry Noble

It was the 1950's, and the violent one-hundred-year struggle for control of Chesapeake Bay's oysters was still raging. Terry Noble was growing up idyllically in the fishing village of Oriole, Maryland, while his father battled poachers to protect the Bay's last oyster beds. A gun shot, piercing the river darkness, changed the family forever. Faced with the prospect of a hard life as a waterman, Terry chose another path. Supported by a determined mother and a marvelous cast of mentors, he fought to turn his dream into reality. Despite thieves, business setbacks, and injury, he persevered and managed to have fun along the way. The pages of this book are rich with the natural history of crabs, oysters and the men who caught them. Interwoven are delightful stories of boyhood scrapes, high school life, big fish and a host of watery escapades. Complimenting it all are the poignant moments with sick animals and the inspiring veterinarian who made them well. This heartwarming, often humorous tale, told with the Chesapeake as its backdrop, illuminates a unique time and place while offering valuable lessons for today.

The Struggle for Survival
an historical, political, and socioeconomic perspective of St. Lucia
By Dr. Anderson Reynolds

Dr. Anderson Reynolds long awaited book, The Struggle For Survival: an historical, political, and socioeconomic perspective of St. Lucia, eloquently retells the story of the tragic 1993 banana strike that culminated in the shooting death of two farmers. However, by going beyond the tragedy and delving into the island's history, farmers' struggles against droughts, hurricanes, falling prices, corrupt institutions, and multinational corporations is seen as a microcosm of the struggles of a people against slavery, colonialism, imperialism, and natural calamities. One comes away from a reading of The Struggle For Survival with the feeling that the plight of farmers was nothing less than an allegory of the history of the island, and the deaths an omen of the future of the banana industry in St. Lucia.

The Struggle For Survival is history that reads like a novel. It is a multilayered and dynamic narrative of the history, politics, culture and economics of St. Lucia. It provides a compelling narrative on what it means to be a St. Lucian, what forces have come together to define and shape St. Lucian society, and the path the country needs to take to move forward as a nation.

Touchdown
The Story of the Cornell Bear
By John H. Foote

Most Cornellians believe that a bear has been the mascot of the Big Redathletic teams and a symbol of Cornell since the University’s earliestdays. The fact is a bear, and a real live bear at that, made its firstappearance on the Cornell campus in 1915, and over the next quarter of acentury was only a sporadic visitor on campus (1916, 1919 and 1939). It wasthese bears, who were flesh and blood, honey-loving, mischievous, and at times ill-tempered, that started the tradition of the Big Red Bear, the much-loved,unofficial mascot of Cornell.

There has been much said about these founding bears, but as is typicalwith oral histories, particularly on a college campus where the stories arerecast every year, the history has become muddled. Touchdown: The Story of the Cornell Bear,by John Foote(Cornell Class of 1974), is thetrue tale of the four original bears and their adventures on campus and on theroad.

“Foote has put together a livelyhistory of the Cornell bears, telling their story in words and a wonderfularray of pictures. Every Cornellian will love this book.”

Toward Holistic History
The Odyssey of an Interdisciplinary Historian

By Corinne Lathrop Gilb

Historian, international lecturer, city planner, and early advocate of interdisciplinary study, Corinne Lathrop Gilb draws on disciplines beyond the conventional study of history to explore such diverse topics as symbolism in urban structure, biorhythms as determinants of creativity, the intertwined histories of liberalism and corporatism, and the role of beauty in public policy. Woven as a subtext throughout this collection of articles, speeches, and other short writings is Dr. Gilb's inquiry into the dynamic between inner history ("the architecture of self-space") and outer history. Thought-provoking and entertaining, Toward Holistic History is timely in its call for an historiography that recognizes the "great honeycomb" of pluralisms that defines our world.

Under The Rising Sun
Memories of a Japanese Prisoner of War
By Mario Machi

Against the advice of his father, Mario Machi dropped out of college and enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 17, 1941. War in the Pacific seemed imminent and he believed it was best for him to enlist early and get himself into something he liked. He'd had three years of college behind him at San Francisco State. With a major in physical education, he'd studied anatomy and biology, and some medicine, and decided the medical corps was the place for him. However, he'd received very little training and in September he asked to be transferred to the infantry.

Like all soldiers readying themselves to go overseas, Mario Machi had a dinner with his family and friends on Fisherman's Wharf, made wishes, tossed pennies into the water, began a diary and naively entered into his diary that he hoped this would be an "experience of value" and that he and all his friends would return safely. Two months later, they were thrown into a world they had not thought humanly possible.

Under Wraps
One Soldier's Hidden Diary of WWII

By Jay Coffman, Edited by Tom Fulks

Under Wraps: the wartime diary of foot soldier Jay Coffman, who served in the South Pacific throughout World War II.  The diary is a compelling story of war, intermingled with moving vignettes of family and Other girl next door back home.  The book is a rare find since keeping a diary in WWII combat zones was a court martial offense.

W. Merle Hill, Ph.D. and World War II infantryman, observes that "Jay's daily reports are a must read for historians interested in a soldier¹s life in the South Pacific."  Editor Tom Fulks adds detailed historical notes that explain many events pertaining to that period.

Up From Slavery
An Autobiography

By Booker T. Washington, read by Andrew L. Barnes

For half a century from its publication in 1901 Up from Slavery was the best known book written by an African American. The life of ex-slave Booker T. Washington embodied the legendary rise of American self-made man, and his autobiography gave prominence for the first time to the voice of a group which had to pull itself up from nothing. From behind the mask of the humble, plainspoken schoolmaster come hints that reveal Washington as the ambitious and tough-minded analyst, a man who had to balance the demands of blacks with the constraints imposed on him by whites.

Walking Man
A Modern Missions Experience in Latin America
By Narciso Zamora
Walking Man: A Modern Missions Experience in Latin America by Narciso Zamora wins the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Religious Nonfiction, announced the Independant Book Publishing Professionals Group

For 30 years, Narciso Zamora has delivered Christ's message on foot, walking more than 10,000 miles through the jungles of South America. Walking Man is a chronicle of an extraordinary journey that amazes and inspires.

Zamora lived a vagrant's life, surviving through delinquency, until through the support of a Christian family, Zamora came to know Christ. After seminary, Zamora trekked with the gospel day and night into the jungle, going from valley to alpine zone and back down again, just to reach isolated villages in Peru, Ecuador and Chile.

Then a new trial faced the Zamora family when his wife's kidneys started to fail. Through the emotional turmoil of caring for a chronically ill spouse, Zamora gained new insights about what it means to carry the cross of Christ. Includes discussion questions.

Walking Man is the first in a series of Modern Missions Experiences featuring present-day missionaries worldwide and across denominations.

Who Was That Lady?
Craig Rice: The Queen of Screwball Mystery
by Jeffrey Marks

Craig Rice, the author of fourteen novels, countless short stories, and a number of true crime pieces, once rivaled Agatha Christie in sales. She was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1946. However, the past fifty years have seen her fall into relative obscurity. Rice made for an interesting subject for a biography because nearly every identification point about the author was in dispute: her birth, her real name, her number of marriages, number of children, her canon of fiction, and the cause of her early death. Marks had to wade through years of research to come up with the answers to those questions. Following a trail that went from Venice, Italy to Venice Beach, CA, he talked to a number of her contemporaries, her family, and friends to come up with an engaging book that reminds readers why Rice remains the undisputed queen of the comedic mystery.

The Wolf and the Lamb
The Case for Jewish Secularism
By Sam Axelrod

The book stresses that Judaism has a universal goal of peace and prosperity for all creatures living on earth. It goes through the history of how this ideal, that every Jew must work toward all his life, gave way to religious rites with exaggerated fervency. A process that led to the near obliteration of the great purpose as it was eloquently described by the prophets.

Woodstock
History and Hearsay

By Anita M. Smith

This first official history of the town documents the run-up of events that culminated in the iconic Woodstock Festival of 1969, and serves as a reminder of the values and artistic impulses that underpinned a more idealistic era. It tells the story of Woodstock from the time of the Amerindians, up through Revolutionary days, the glass-making era, the down-rent war, and the establishment of a utopian arts enclave during the early 20th century. With an artist's eye, a worldly sophistication and a you-are-there charm, Smith weaves in tales of witches, farmers, mountain folk, Second World War veterans, and an astonishing array of fellow artists, neighbors and visitors that include Eleanor Roosevelt, John Burroughs, George Bellows, Helen Hayes, James T. Shotwell, John F. Carlson, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Edward G. Robinson, John Dewey, Pete Seeger, Carl Walters and many others.

The second edition includes a great deal of new material, including extensive endnotes, a bibliography and an expanded index. With the addition of close to 200 art reproductions, maps and images of local personalities, it showcases the work of the many creative people who have called Woodstock their home.
